Vladimir Orlov, director of the Center for Policy Studies in Moscow, was interviewed by RFE/RL's Radio Farda correspondent Fariba Mavaddat on 12 January about Russian support for Iran's nuclear program and whether that support has changed in recent months.
RFE/RL: In the past Russia had always -- if not backed Iran with [its] nuclear programs -- seldom criticized it and on several occassions insisted that Iran's nuclear activities are peaceful. Why [is Russia having a] change of heart now?

The sign is encouraging. It remains to be seen whether Putin regime decided to completely back away from dangerous cooperation with Iran in Nuclear or military field, but Kremlin may have realized that supporting Iranian Mullahs Nuclear ambitions will pose a direct danger to Russia in a very near future.

First, Chancellor Merkel meets Bush and they seem to agree on Iran. Canada's elections may go to the conservatives, and it looks like Putin may not be as big of a friend to Iran as we thought.
We're turning the corner.

I told you a long time ago Russia is working very closely with the US in the GWOT. They are not going to object very loudly when the US takes out the Iranian nuclear capability. Everyone knows the US, including the Russians, that Iranian is not going to be allowed to have the bomb except the mullahs.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think 2006 will have its share of hardships, pain, blood, and war. But I think we're going to be on the winning end this time.
