Fighters deploy (Iran)
Washington Times ^ | January 13, 2006 | Bill Gertz and Rowan Scarborough

Coinciding with increased tensions with Iran over the resumption of illicit uranium enrichment, the U.S. Air Force has dispatched additional warplanes to the region in a not-so-subtle sign, military sources say.

An entire wing of F-16s, the Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing based in Fort Wayne, Ind., left for a base in southwest Asia on Tuesday. A wing is usually about 72 aircraft and several hundred support personnel.

F-16s and support personnel from the 4th Fighter Squadron of the 388th Fighter Wing based at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, also deployed recently to Iraq. The squadron has 12 F-16s.

Both units' F-16s could be used in any military operation to take out Iranian nuclear facilities.

A spokesman for the U.S. Central Command Air Forces, which runs air operations in the region, said the F-16 deployment of about 80 jets is part of a rotation and is not related to Iran's uranium reprocessing.

My guess is that if they were actually going to do something, we would not be reading about it.

They alway say it's part of normal rotation.

Same thing will be said when 3 carrier groups steam into the region.

It's hard to deploy an air wing without somebody noticing. I've been out a while, but I would not expect an entire wing to be deployed. That's a pretty good show of force.

What do you think the time-table is?

Will we have a supporting role behind Isreal or will the US have to do the dirty work once again?

Can we expect Britian's help?

I have a real problem with the damn news media informing us and everyone else on what is going on militarily...Bill Gertz is good, but he needs to know when to STFU sometimes... just like the rest of the media.

If, the White House wants it known that they are forming some muscle somewheres, send a memo off to the government in question and tell them your doing it. The way it is done now, puts lives at risk.

uh more msn nonsense. 80 warplanes require much more than a few hundred support personell. this is a fairly biggish deployment. you can be sure iran knows these planes are nearby, wouldnt surprise me at all if we are doing airspace incursions to test their air defense. anyone know what the russians have sold for air defense?

I am not a fan of Iran however I do wonder the wording of this article. Why is the resumption of "illicit" uranium for a country illicit to have uranium enrichment?

Is there some global law against it?

your post sums up the whole quandry very nicely. its not illegal at all. its just that we are the big dog on the block and dont want them to play in this arena, in other words, this is real life, not liberal nonsense.

Gertz is expertly irrelevant. A genuine Master of the extraneous, though.

I'm sure they're moving them to counter the insurgent's own air force. (/sarc)

Anybody know why we can't re-arm ICBMs with conventional weapons and hit those facilities safely from North Dakota?

-"Will we have a supporting role behind Isreal or will the US have to do the dirty work once again?"

two things...

1. We will have to do the dirty work. I don't believe that Israel is in the best (internal) position politically now to initiate and carry out somthing like this in the short term.

2. There is definitely a plan (IMHO) that they have established to carry out such a strike. The only question is the 'timing'. That will not be decided until the U.S. feels that they have given the UN/Security sufficient opportunity to address and implement sanctions.
