Based on what I have been told, some elderly women go to the hairdresser once a week and get their hair done including a wash. Their hair stays in place partly because they do not get their hair washed again until they return to the salon the following week.

The elderly ladies also get the hair lacquered so heavily (with the old fashioned hair spray) that a hair couldn't get out of place if you went after it with a cold chisel.

The new generation of "light hold" hair spray doesn't produce that "helmet" look, but your average elderly lady LIKES it that way. She doesn't have to worry about it until next Wednesday.
