An Evergreen Story
On Saturday the Washington Redskins beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-10 in an NFL wild-card game, which means that this weekend the Redskins travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks, whose 13-3 record is the best in the National Football Conference. The Washington Post, a newspaper in the District of Columbia, reports that this is causing some trouble for a newspaper in Washington state:
To avoid insulting native American heritage, the Seattle Times decided to limit severely the use of the term Redskins in the paper--even if a team with that name will dominate news coverage this week. The Times will not use the moniker in headlines or captions. Reporters can use it only once, as a first reference, in all stories. The Redskins will be referred to almost exclusively as Washington--which could get a little confusing for local readers who also live in that state.

Actually, I'm quite surprised that nobody has complained that the name "Wizards", as in the "Washington Wizards", evokes images of old hooded white guys and the Grand Wizards of the Klan.
No offence friend, but these terms are very much alive and well, having been nurtured by community destroying shake down artists and racists like Jesse Jackson, the congressional black caucus, most rappers, and the democratic party. You are comparing hate words that are now dramatically more popular in the age of gimmeedat by the originators and perveyors of the movement than they ever were in the dimly lit but mostly historic days of white against everyone else racism.
I was aware of the sentiment then, and the word Redskins was never a vulgar or hateful expression, nor has there ever been any sort of significant racism towards indians in general that you couldn't closely compare to any basic ethnic, religous, age or political group in this country, not to mention all the fond names our neighboring countries have for us and we towards them. Fact is, I can't think of one slur word for an indian, and I thought I'd heard them all. This is the 1st time I'd ever read the term "digger", but if some one asked me to guess, i'd probably think it was attributed to the chinese, having grew up watching kung fu, where they were protrayed as miners.
I don't know what groups you were fighting for the right to educate yourself and have religous freedoms in California in the 60s & 70s, but they must have been either isolated or very well hidden from the rest of the poeple like me who lived there, or possibly, as in the case of most black against white racism today, kept alive by a few so they could use your votes to "help" you acquire dependence.
Seeing as you're here, I'd think any efforts along those lines proved ultimately unsuccessful.
Dang! you nailed it.
Game over. lol
I agree completely, Stone Mountain!!!
Indiginous Persons potato, of course.
AMEN!
I doubt the name will change. What most West coasters don't realize is just how much Native Americans assimilated with the settlers along the East coast. In truth there is a little Redskin in all of us "Washington" fans.
Or the absurdity of getting bent out of shape about it.
Well, I am deeply offended by the Celtics. That goofy looking leprechaun is very offensive to my peoples traditions. The Minnesota Vikings also tarnished my heritage. We never had a sex boat scandal, well not with women on the boat. We kept that stuff on the shore.
I was most happy my 'Skins spanked the Dullus Cowgirlz twice (2 times) this season... finally. I especially liked the first win in God's toilette bowl... flush!
"The Atlanta Crackers are one of professional baseball's most successful franchises in history. From their inception in 1901 until their last season in 1965, they won a total of 17 league championships, or pennants. During their 64 year history, the Atlanta Crackers won more titles than any other team except the great New York Yankees. This is one reason why the Crackers were often called the Yankees of the Minors; at one point the Crackers even wore Yankee-like pinstripes!"
