Shalit's "apology" is very carefully phrased. Notice that he doesn't retract anything, say he was wrong in his conclusions or anything like that. He just says he's sorry if he offended folks. I think he did a good job with this. I'm thinking he had his lawyer help him write that letter.

If you aren't offending someone you are not contributing to the public debate.

As a practical matter it means we cannot trust the opinion of movie reviewers since they fear "politically correct" groups.
