Stockdale was the highest-ranking naval officer ever held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. His plane was shot down Sept. 9, 1965, while flying combat missions over North Vietnam. In recognition of his leadership and sacrifice he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1976. Stockdale spent more than seven years in captivity at prisons in North Vietnam, including time at the infamous Hanoi Hilton. Four years of those years were spent in solitary confinement. While imprisoned, Stockdale is credited with organizing a set of rules to govern the behavior of fellow prisoners of war and for helping to develop a code for prisoners to communicate with each other that included tapping on cell walls. I wonder if he and Sen. McCain were ever together.

I like the way this was written - no politics. None required to pay homage to a war hero.

Whenever I hear "First man in. Last man out.", I think of Adm. Stockdale.
I felt very bad for the pounding he took as Perot's running mate. He deserved much better.

Concur. Stockdale was a hero!
I am falling in luv with the Burke class (the lines and the swept back look). At first I thought they were too "shaven" or "Swedish"
To: Dubya
A well deserved tribute to an American hero.

- Start a Navy ping list.
- Put me on it.
- Carry on.

I can think of few greater honors than to have your country name a ship after you. And not just any ship, but a fighting ship.

..McCain's suffering notwithstanding, neither he nor Ross Perot could not hold Admiral Stockdale's shoes.
