New Chancellor comes to call (Germany´s Merkel meets President Bush)
Washington Times ^ | Robert Gerald Livingston

Posted on 01/12/2006 11:26:24 AM PST by Michael81Dus

Germany's new Chancellor Angela Merkel, due for a warm welcome in the Bush White House tomorrow, represents a new political phenomenon in her country. Her government embraces her conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) with their Bavarian allies in the Christian Social Union, and the Social Democrats, the first time such lineup in 37 years.

It is quite unlike its predecessor, the Red/Green coalition of 1998-2005, in which the ranks were filled with "sixty-eighters,"offspring of the 1968 anti-Vietnam War and anti-establishment student revolt, in whose new-leftist hearts dislike and distrust of America lingered.

Germany's relations with Washington have nearly always been better with CDU-run governments.

Thank you for the clarity. In other words, our defensible stance vis a vis Guantanamo should be more loudly proclaimed.

I haven´t been to Afghanistan yet, but as far as I know, the Taliban militia on the battlefield wears kinda uniform (=recognizable), carries its arms openly, and fights like a usual militia their enemy from the North (and the US). As I said, one must differentiate. We´re not talking about people abusing red half-moon or red cross signs, etc.

The dirt is that the US keep prisoners without trials, nothing else. I wished it ain´t so, because it harms your agenda.

Yeah! Darn it. We won't let them back out to kill more people. Aren't we just the MEANEST things?

We are in a war. You don't try OR release enemy combatants until the war is over.

Bet you didn't read any of the links either.

It has always been so with the left.

It is fine to kill innocents. It is wrong to punish the guilty.

The dirt is in your smearing of our military and our country. That's where the dirt is. Look at your hand. You're not doing anything for goodwill between Germany and the U.S., I can tell you that!

Well Michael we are not going to agree with you on this but then allies do not agree on everything. I am glad you are a Freeper and are willing to stick to your guns even when your view are unpopular. I just do not agree with your assumptions. You might want to branch out and read some of the Conservative blogs and media. What you are seeing in the Europe is basically presented from a political advocacy viewpoint. Take what you read with a large grain of salt, "Journalists" are advocates of a particular point of view NOT honest brokers of fact these days. Most of what you read in the European media is HIGHLY slanted. It's not false, just presented in a way to present ONLY one side of the issue.

Setting up IED's in the carcass of a dead cat is NOT fighting like a war, no matter what you say. Do you have figures for how many at Gitmo are from Afghanistan vs. Iraq? I don't. So I can't speak to that. But I'll tell you I don't believe for a minute the BS about the uniform. They disappear into a crowd. That means it's not a uniform.

Getting my second wind.

I'll credit a wicked combination of Irish, Welsh and .... Germans who arrived here BEFORE the revolution!

Thanks!

You have a major problem with moral clarity.

Most of Europe has the same problem.

It seems to me that We have been building plenty of schools in Afghanistan and Iraq.

We have been taking casualties erring on the side of caution trying to avoid civilian casualties.

Europe has surrendered to the Islamists already.

Why should terrorists be tried before UN courts?

The UN court is a self interest court. Proof is the fiasco trial of Milosevic, who IMO, from following the trial, is no terrorist.

I wish that Condi would dispense from commenting how the EU or Russia run their countries. Like wise, Merkel and Cofi should button up. Comments on Gitmo are not helpful.

You hope you will respond with all your might. You won't.

You won't because you keep pretending that it is individual criminals doing this.

What you will do is hunt for a few individuals and ignore your dead.

No, no, we didn´t capture them, we didn´t keep them 4 years without a trial in a prison camp. This is your dirty business. You should get back to common sense, not we.

Precisely.

I am also not entirely comfortable with how long it took to determine certain of these individual's statuses. It may be that evidence either way was lacking, in which case too bad; if, however, it was because the mechanism wasn't in place then we need to correct that because I have a hunch Gitmo's going to be around for awhile.

Military Tribunal... Take the steel wool out of your ears.

Yes, I'm Yelling

Crying over innocent deaths is not compassion.

Preventing more deaths is.
