GOP FEELS OUT DEM SUOZZI FOR GOV RUN (tapping into groups who want Spitzer defeated)
NY POST ^ | January 12, 2006 | FREDRIC U. DICKER, State Editor

Posted on 01/12/2006 8:31:42 AM PST by Liz

ALBANY — Republican leaders are secretly discussing endorsing Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi for governor — even as Suozzi plans to announce tomorrow that he'll challenge Eliot Spitzer for the Democratic nomination, The Post has learned.

"Suozzi is a proven vote-getter with Democrats and Republicans in the suburbs, and he could be a real threat to Spitzer running as a Democrat on the Republican ticket," said a top GOP insider. Former state GOP Executive Director Brendan Quinn said of a possible Suozzi candidacy, "An Italian Catholic Democrat from Nassau County would have real appeal to suburban voters, who are typically Republican."

Suozzi, even though he is a Democrat, is also popular with many wealthy Republican Wall Street executives, who want Spitzer defeated for what they regard as overzealous prosecution of corporate wrongdoing.

Under a little-used provision in state law, state GOP leaders have the right to authorize someone who is not a Republican to run on the Republican line.

GOP interest in backing Suozzi is dependent on whether Rochester billionaire and newly minted Republican Tom Golisano enters the governor's race later...... former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld is likely to be the GOP nominee, and that's troubling key Republicans, including Gov. Pataki.

What kind of pathetic leadership do state Republican have if this is being seriuosly floated. Now if it just a ploy to play mind games with Spitzer..play on.

oops I forgot about Golisano. I HOPE he runs, but I think Guliani would have a better chance of winning.

Rudy would win. More state governors become president than senators. Depends on what he wants.

He wants to be President.

I think we might be able to talk him into running in 2010 assuming he loses the Primary in 2008 (which I think he will), but not before.

It's going to be nasty with hillary, he backed out for health reasons in the Senate race. He will have to go the distance if he takes this on. I am not sure I would back him in a primary, but against hillary there is no contest for my vote. I would walk the streets handing our flyers then.

he is doing a bad job in nassau county as far as I am concerned - but gets 100% favorable press. 45 home invasions in the county, gun permit requests up 400%, but somehow the GOP can't figure out they need to make crime an issue. automatic tax increases are built into a faulty asseesment system, Suozzi did not implement that but he has done nothing to fix it. All he does is advocate apartment buildings be built in nassau so population can increase, but the infrastructure and quality of life cannot handle it.

A. Because Chafee is a pacifist, peacenic hack. Weld is not

B. Because Chafee didn't support GWB for President. Weld did. Publically and often.

C. Because ChafeeIs in the Senate, not the Governor's mansion.

D. Because Chafee indicated he might switch parties, and thus, is not even reliable for a vote for majority leader. If Weld were going to do that, he would have done it a LONG time ago.

E. Because you have still provided me with nothing but innuendo and bad analisys as to why Weld was so bad. Even if you are right, it seemed to be more a matter of bad tactics then ideology.

being governor of new york state may well be a step DOWN from being mayor of the capital city of the world. add to that, Rudy is one of the few or perhaps the only republican that likely gets strong positive numbers regarding the anti-terrorism issue. the republican party wins on the national security issue generally, but candidates like McCain or Allen or Owens aren't going to have the kind of pull assocated with 9/11 that Rudy would have. Our party needs that issue.

Rudy may not be able to win the nomination because of his social positions, but then we need him as VP on the ticket.

Bad analysis ? So you are now DENYING he decimated the recovering MA GOP ? You are DENYING he attempted to undermine the national party by supporting Sen. Jesse Helms's Democrat opponent ? You are DENYING he waged open warfare against Conservatives, both in purging them from the Massachusetts party, and also attempting to carry the war nationwide ? You are DENYING he accepted a high-profile diplomatic posting by Clinton in order to facilitate that war and attack the GOP from it ? You are DENYING he proved to be an incompetent leader, both in Massachusetts, but also in Kentucky, driving a small college into the ground with his gross mismanagement ?

Sorry, Red, Weld makes Chafee look like a rank amateur. Chafee is a clueless moron, Weld does what he does on purpose. Why would Weld switch parties when he did such an excellent job for the 'Rats while serving in the GOP ?

9 years ago this article was written, and it STILL nails that slimeball's sorry ass:

What if the Repulican President dropped dead of natural causes? Rudy would have to make the equivalent of a public confession renouncing all of his liberal tendencies.

With two previous wives, not counting the current, under his belt, and his endorsement of Cuomo in 94 against Pataki, Rudy won't 'fly' in 'flyover country', despite his name recognition in generic popularity polls. He'd be wise to look at the mansion in Albany, IMHO.

Now that Schumer is backing that's just more reason not to like him.

Schmuckie is only backing Suozzi because he lothes Spitzer's hogging up camera time and publicity. Two bullies going at it by one saying that the enemy of his enemy is his friend ... thats all there is to it.
