Father Of LSD Celebrating 100th Birthday

(AP) GENEVA LSD is an unlikely subject for a 100th birthday party. Yet the Swiss chemist who discovered the mind-altering drug and was its first human guinea pig is celebrating his centenary Wednesday — in good health and with plans to attend an international seminar on the hallucinogenic.

"I had wonderful visions," Albert Hofmann said, recalling his first accidental consumption of the drug.

"I sat down at home on the divan and started to dream," he told the Swiss television network SF DRS. "What I was thinking appeared in colors and in pictures. It lasted for a couple of hours and then it disappeared."

Hofmann, who also had bad experiences with the drug, continues to insist it should be legalized for medical treatment, particularly in psychiatric research. But LSD's reputation has been as turbulent as some acid trips.

The drug earned a bad reputation amid fatalities associated with hallucinations and reports of "flashbacks" — the recurrence of hallucinations when not taking the drug.

LSD inspired the 1960s hippy generation and was immortalized in the Beatles' hit "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," although the band denied any connection. But it was also known as Like Swift Dead.

For decades after LSD was banned in the late 1960s, Hofmann defended his invention.

"I produced the substance as a medicine," he said. "It's not my fault if people abused it."

The chemist — who still takes nearly daily walks in the picturesque village where he lives in the Jura mountains with his wife of 70 years, Anita — discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 in 1938 while studying the medicinal uses of a fungus found on wheat and other grains at the Sandoz pharmaceuticals firm, now part of Novartis.

I will only reply to you one more time in order to try to shut up your less-than-well-informed yap!

Here goes:

You are one of the nastiest people I've encountered on FR. Maybe you are the center of your universe --- never suggested that, moron!

You are nothing but a druggie so your opinions, accounts, anecdotes, etc. mean nothing and are value-less.

I hardly imbibed any of these things in the past 30+ years. You really are a spectacular moron ......... or you just cannot READ!

As for knowing nothing, I hardly think your LSD use was done in the name of science. --- no one suggested that it was done "in the name of science". You still are "stuck on stupid".

Oh, and one last thing, your little stories about your ecstatic drug experiences really made me want to throw up. --- LOL ......"throw up" --- if you could only throw up on your shoes. Oh, you still are "stuck on stupid".

I pray you don't work in any kind of environment where other people's safety is at stake.

You're still quite consistent ................ "stuck on stupid".

***

By the way, if you know absolutely nothing about something such as LSD, it would be best for you to be silent on the matter!

I'm 59 years old and never drink coffee, so I make no assumptions about the effects of a few cups of coffee on an individual.

You need to get a grip..............

***

STUCK ON STUPID .......... LOL!

If you gain a great deal of weight while frequently using LSD it will store in the fat. When that fat is burned off the active ingredients may be released. This happened to a friend of mine when he lost almost 100 pounds (he was quite the large stoner).

A very inspiring story. I'm sure that crap (weight gain) happens all the time on LSD (sarcasm off).

Btw, genius, your friend is one of a kind gaining a lot of weight while doing LSD! What were his initials ................ M.M.?

;-)

That means, if I ever found out my pastor, dentist, doctor, hair stylist, you name it was playing with this stuff, that would be the end of the relationship.

Ah..... "hair stylist" .......... you just may be a woman. LOL.

No wonder you are so self-righteous about this. Just figure if your unfortunate hair stylist had ever used a little LSD .......... I'd stick with him if I were you ...........he just might be creative enough now to be able to do something with your hair to make you look somewhat presentable.

I was ASA '69-71. I had a top secret crypto-clearance as I was a code receiver.

The Lt. in HRP screening asked me if I thought my past
drug usage would prevent me from doing my job in the
Air Force. I said no, so she told me to say from then on
that I tried Marijuana only ten times and Acid once.
I also held a Top Secret clearance because I worked
around crypto keying material.

And to me, the best thing about LSD is that it can teach you what is ALWAYS THERE (in nature), if you just take time to look!

I'll bite, since no one else has. What can LSD teach you about nature that careful observations and rigorous adherence to the scientific method cannot? It's been around for decades, so there must surely be many accounts of natural discoveries brought on by LSD, right? If I lock Alcubierre and Hawking in a room with some acid and a white board, will I have a working warp drive by morning? If I give an African cryptozoologist some acid, will he find Mokeli Membe? (Probably. But can he bring it back?)

LOL Sure, Doc, medical treatment.

If the Doc thinks I buy that story, he's taken one too many trips.

Btw, you should like "Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign" from your silly screen name ................And the sign said long haired freaky people need not apply So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why He said you look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do So I took off my hat I said imagine that, huh, me working for you.

Well, there ya go - you just proved that LSD users do suffer flashbacks.

I took more than my share of a variety of drugs in my young adult years. The only one I would even consider doing again in LSD. Seems like it was less debilitating than your coke, meth, etc. Plus it was over a lot sooner.

That said, me taking LSD again probably is not going to happen. But I'm still looking for a way to naturally achieve the experience.

My instinct tells me the best way to get high naturally is to study and follow the word of God. I don't do a very good job of that most of the time.

What can LSD teach you about nature that careful observations and rigorous adherence to the scientific method cannot? ---- I appreciate your question, but "careful observations and rigorous adherence to the scientific method", by your definition, is NOT the experience of LSD use. You have answered your own question.

It's been around for decades ---- what's been around for decades?

If I lock Alcubierre and Hawking in a room with some acid and a white board, will I have a working warp drive by morning? If I give an African cryptozoologist some acid, will he find Mokeli Membe? (Probably. But can he bring it back?) --- I appreciate your sense of humor.

All I know is that, for example, I know nothing about heroin or "ecstacy" .......... never used either. But, I know quite a great deal about LSD. It is absurd for those who have never used a drug to suggest that they know much of anything about its REAL effects.

And let me say just one more thing. This question of the "good or bad" concerning the use of LSD is not unlike the question about GUNS!

It's not the gun that does the damage, it's the user who may do the damage with improper use. With LSD, (marijuana, alcohol, etc.), it's not necessarily the drug itself that is intrinsically evil or harmful............. it is, of course, the user who may misuse the drug.

The ignorant (unknowing) posters on this thread cannot know about LSD just as I know nothing of heroin. They should then stop making their very foolish assumptions and their uninformed attacks.

Go Steelers!

;-)

Yes, it was always best to get it from someone you trusted completely.

Back in the early 80's, I knew a guy in Denver who made the best blotter. It was the good stuff and a trip lasted 8 to 10 hours. Nothing like getting Rocky Mountain high man! :-) I had some great experiences up in the mountains, tripping with a buddy of mine and hiking around. The old cemetary near Central City was also pretty cool to tour while tripping.

I found it was best to trip while out in nature and *not* around a crowd of people, especially people who were not tripping. The last time I tripped was July 4th, 1982. I don't have 8-10 hours to devote to the experience anymore and don't really miss it. I did not have any long term effects from it either. Oh yeah, there were times when I hoped for a flashback :-), but it never happened. I would never encourage anyone to do it. Tripping is something you really have to want to do without any misgivings and set and setting must be taken seriously.

A great post, if I may so. You are a wise human, imho.

It would be great to achieve the same thing naturally --- As I mentioned earlier, one of the great things about LSD, imo, was that once you have "observed" something on LSD, you needn't take it again. The experience teaches you that these beautiful things are always here to see, feel, and to rationally consider .......... if we just take the time to pay attention.

I appreciate your post........... you have been there.

LOL.................... you know what......... I have this so far unspoken idea............ how about all the older FReeper "space-cadet's getting together somewhere after we win the 2008 election and after Ted Kennedy finally dumps that death car, that '67 Olds Delta 88' on EBay..... we could most likely have a pretty good time.
