Vanity: Just when you thought things were hopeless....

Posted on 01/10/2006 8:48:04 PM PST by Hi Heels

Welcome to white bread Simi Valley, CA, a Republican stronghold in California. Sunday I went to Vons Pavillion to pick up some groceries. In the Queue behind me was a gigantic, the biggest, the blackest green beret I have ever seen, and I'm a colonel's daughter. He was holding his breakfast, oatmeal, etc. THis is how it went:

Me: "you just get back?"

Soldier: "yes maam."

me: "You go ahead of me, I have a lot."

Soldier: "that's not necessary, maam."

me: "you go ahead, please?"

The guy in front of me: "Go ahead of me, too. I have to use a credit card."

Soldier: "Thanks."

*cashier rings up his breakfast*

Another man runs up and pushes the soldier's hand away from the scanner and runs his own debit card through the machine.

The other man to the cashier: "are we good?"

Cashier: "we're good"

Soldier: "Thank you."

*shakes other guy's hand and leaves*

*Several people offer to help pay the soldier's tab. All refused.

In Kullifornia. I saw it with my own eyes. You read about it, but how many times can you say you actually saw it. Came home in tears.

Oh, I usually see your animated tissue box for that.

Early mornings,...when I can get on, I don't have either my ping list or image list opened; unless it's a day I don't have to go in to work.

:)

I just confused the Durante sniff with a Kitty sniff.

Where would we be without them?

It is very likely we would be dead.

"You can buy some coffee, put it in the basket and they will ship it. Yes, Starbucks. "

Wonderful. They need it.

Son had me ship him his coffee maker because the ones in the PX were too expensive. He never thought he'd need hot coffee in the desert but discovered those night patrols can get pretty darn cold.

"that's not necessary, maam.""

At my son's send-off they handed out tickets to the troops for free food, to be used only at one certain booth. Some young soldier misunderstood directions and wound up at the same booth where I was purchasing a burger. He made his selection, his food arrived, and when he tried to use the coupon they informed him he would need cash. I immediately stepped in and said I"d take care of it.

He said exactly the same thing: "That's not necessary, Ma'am."

Well, yes it was. In my book. And so I paid for his meal, and he thanked me profusely, and I thanked him for his service.

Westlake, CA high school in Agoura? I think we (Santa Clara HS, Oxnard) rumbled with Westlake High during a basketball game in 1979.

Actually, in Westlake, but near Agoura. Agoura has its own HS. Very vague recollection of some kind of rumble -- didn't play, but did cheer. So, maybe we met!

P.S. Welcome to PA! Moved from CA long ago, now firmly rooted in Chester County.

I was in SF for Fleet Week and we did the same thing for a group of sailors at the restaurant. The entire place couldn't give them enough food and drink. They were climbing all over each other to pick up their tab.

It was heartwarming!

Thanks for posting this thread.
