WASHINGTON - Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay tried to pressure the Bush administration into shutting down an Indian-owned casino that lobbyist Jack Abramoff wanted closed shortly after a tribal client of Abramoff's donated to a DeLay political action committee, The Associated Press has learned.
The Texas Republican demanded closure of the casino, owned by the Alabama-Coushatta tribe of Texas, in a Dec. 11, 2001 letter to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft. The Associated Press obtained the letter from a source who did not want to be identified because of an ongoing federal investigation of Abramoff and members of Congress.
"We feel that the Department of Justice needs to step in and investigate the inappropriate and illegal actions by the tribe, its financial backers, if any, and the casino equipment vendors," said the letter, which was also signed by Texas Republican Reps. Pete Sessions, John Culberson and Kevin Brady.

politics of personal destruction alert.
You dont say... imagine that.. a lobbyist getting action from a representative...
Democraps NEVER do that!!
(*rocket propelled vomiting here*)
Just what do Dems think a Lobbyist does? Last I heard, some Dems might want to watch their record a little closer. Seems Abramoff 'influenced' a few of them as well.
Keep digging, ya'll, let's clean out the dirty Dems as well, starting with Kerry, Pelosi, Reid and whichever other one is found to have received money from Abramoff.
If it's a crime for one, it's a crime for all, in my book.
Ah yes, the AP is trolling through the dumpster for their DNC masters.
This is not good for Delay. Not at all. I expect he'll be withdrawing from running for re-election shortly.
Not that Democrats haven't done the same thing. But Delay may be the scapegoat du jour on this one.
The AP has interfered with an ongoing investigation for partisan purposes.
(Imagine that - lol)
Yup. DeLay's all done. There are those who will support him here on FR, but most Republicans in elected positions are going to be staying away from him in droves.
He may even have to resign his current House seat...before the election.
"The AP has interfered with an ongoing investigation for partisan purposes."
OK. Are you on DeLay's side on this one? He went too far, got caught, and is now going to have to pay up. Happens all the time.
This story has the smell of truth all over it. DeLay is history.
It is this that did in DeLay, not Ronnie Earle.
Lucy Ramirez perhaps????
Didja meet her at a Texas Kinkos????
Is Mary Mapes working for AP now????
I'll dare bet that there were democrats who wrote letters too. I say its selective leaking to smear Delay.
This is what congressmen do. They write letters and make laws and spend our money.
Hey, I'm all for this.
But, when are we going to investigate influence-peddling by Democrats and their various contributors like the NEA?
"It is this that did in DeLay, not Ronnie Earle."
I think you're right. Greed and lust for power are the downfall of lots of folks.
Personally, I'm about ready to throw all the bums out and elect an entirely new slate to Congress. This is getting really tiresome.
Problem is, we'd just get another set of bums.
I bet if you dig deep enough, there is plenty of blame to go around. I have yet to hear any huge outcry from the Indians, though. But perhaps just no one is listening.
