Bush forces Hamas down Israel’s throat in Jerusalem. Olmert government is stunned
DEBKAfile Exclusive ^ | January 9, 2006, 11:53 PM (GMT+02:00)

Posted on 01/09/2006 7:46:28 PM PST by strategofr

Sunday night Jan 8, US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice discussed the forthcoming Palestinian elections to the legislative council on the telephone with Palestinian Authority chairman Abu Mazen.

Jerusalem was not briefed, DEBKAfile’s political sources report.

Twelve hours later, the US consul in Jerusalem Jacob Walles visited Abu Mazen’s office in Ramallah with an oral message from President George W. Bush. According to our sources, it was a presidential guarantee that all the Palestinian parties running for election on Jan 25 would be allowed to campaign openly in East Jerusalem, eligible voters in the city would be permitted to cast their votes through local post offices, and the voter slips of all Palestinian parties without exception would be available in the balloting booths.

The Israeli government was not informed of the extraordinary step taken by Bush over its head and in respect of Israeli sovereign territory.

The step has some disturbing implications:

1. The Bush administration took advantage of Ehud Olmert’s having been less than a week in the job of acting prime minister and treated his reluctance to undertake firm decisions - as long as prime minister Ariel Sharon’s condition was uncertain -as a leadership vacuum in Jerusalem. Without a word, administration officials marked down the goings-on around Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem and Olmert’s slowness to rise to the challenge.

3. Olmert’s failure to come down decisively on the Jerusalem issue has a serious consequence: Washington’s intercession enables the terrorist Hamas group to fly its green flags and hold rallies on Temple Mount with its standard calls for jihad against Israel, as well as piling its voter slips at Israeli government post offices as an option for the Palestinian voter. By this device, the backhanded recognition of a Palestinian terrorist organization sworn to destroy the Jewish state has been thrust down the interim government’s throat.

4. The Bush administration showed no consideration for Olmert’s efforts to find his feet as head of government, bid for the leadership of Kadima party and fight a tough election.

Governing circles in Jerusalem were stunned by the White House action. They asked if Bush wanted Binyamin Netanyahu and Likud to win the March election having awarded him the edge on the Jerusalem issue. Part of the shock derived from the Israeli ministers’ mistaken conviction that Abu Mazen would postpone the election to prevent the Hamas beating his ruling Fatah. DEBKAfile’s sources repeatedly reported that the White House would insist on the Palestinian vote taking place on schedule – even at the price of a Hamas win and regardless of Sharon’s indisposition and a transitional administration very much at sea in Jerusalem.

There are still hopes in Israeli government circles that the two US officials David

Welch and Elliot Abrams due this week will help moderate some of the particulars of the Bush pledge to the Palestinian leader. But the chances of this are slim.

"True signs of run off the rails was 73 when Kissinger rescued the Egyptian army trapped in Sinai from annihilation."

The Russians gave clear signals of plans to intervene to prevent the destruction of Egypt. US/Soviet nuclear confrontation was not imposssible. I believe Kissinger acted wisely.

"Either you lack an understanding of how outfits like Debka deliberately make up or distort news stories to increase readership or promote/plant certain spins (and thus you display a unexplainable naivety for a grown adult on FR) or you are being deliberately dense."

In the future, provide me with specific evidence of Debka's errors. This will eventually make me abandon them if they are really so innaccurate. I judge them on their content as I evaluate it using my own knowlege. If you have detailed knowlege of the inner functioning of Debka, I waould be interested to hear about it.

And why should I do your homework?! Be just like the rest of us who have come to the same conclusion about Debka, i.e. not reliable, We see what they write, monitor for what actually happens, and keep score accordingly.

"they get feeds from intelligence buddies of theirs who have an agenda"

Debka can also be sort of a Mossad chat room. For Mossad and other "operatives" who are friends of the Debka guys. Sometimes rumors and BS are posted for the fun of it and to influence events. Same as is done here BTW! But sometimes Debka is dead right!

God is for real, the real world is about to dawn with two suns on the horizon, and one of them will be real close. When I was a child, people told me how could a God of Justice allow such horrible things to happen in the world. Now I see that God was not telling me what He was going to do to the world, but what man was going to do to man.

Now that Sharon is disabled, there is nobody to command the Jews the bail the world out of Iran. Nothing is going to stop them from nuking our troops in Iraq as soon as they can. But if the US attacks Iraq, wihout a kiss on the hand to Saudi Arabia, you are going to be burning the byproducts of your bean dinner in your gas tank, and you cannot pull out without defeat in the eyes of the terrorists.

I think you got yourself painted into a corner, and it was two things that did it to you.

One, you compromised your allies for a bit of oil.

Two, Pride.

Suggestion, buy some SPF 1000, your going to need it.

I thought this was FreeRepublic but I seem to have wandered into a racist loonybin nestled inside.

Welcome to Free Republic!
Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

Good points. I have read things on Debka that are unlikely to ever be confirmed one way or the other. Stories that no one---outside of a top Al Qaeda lieutenant---could ever definitively confirm or deny.

On the other hand, much of their analysis seems better than any other source I am aware of.

I find it interesting that I am consistently and roundly attacked for posting anything from Debka. I have not seen this negative attitude toward any other source. I'm not sure where this comes from.

I think part of it is that Debka likes to be fast. That necessarily cuts down on accuracy but it's a trade-off I'm willing to make. All information is time sensitive, but many people obviously do not understand this.

Then again, some people simply want to suppress any good source of information if they think they can get away with it, due to the type of agenda they are pursuing. This is particularly evident in the response to any anti-Russian statements or information posted here.

To get back to some of your points, I believe the people running the Debka site are serious about providing good information. They must be dependent on the Mossad as a source---but in my opinion they are not controlled by the Mossad. I believe the Debka people have a commitment to the truth that they carry out as best they are able with the resources available.

Clever way of saying you don't have any facts.

I am NOT like the rest of you---thank God! But don't let me disturb you...continue on your scurrying way to the sea.

Why on earth would anyone thank God that they were a gullible dimwit (and seemed content to stay like that) because can't do their own research?

A good friend says that now that Sharon pulled out of Gaza, it is a target-rich environment.

Various credible sources report significant influx of weaponry via tunnels with Egypt's tacit consent.

There is a serious karmic debt due for having targeted Israeli women and children.

This is not negotiable.

Perhaps you are keying on the America rules the world and you can just obey part? Or is the mention of God too much for you? I just don't get it, God is not a race, though the "you will submit to terrorists, because we say so" is a bit racist.

Oh, by the way, been at Freeper for a while, pretty much the whole war.

Me too, remember that rumor that Israel was helping the Jordanians fight the Iraqi's invading? How everyone laughed? How only Debka carried that story and nobody else did? People are still laughing...

Only I watched Israel rush Abrams tanks through Jerusalem to bolster the border with Jordan and watched troop Helo's fly over the city to the Jordan border. I watched, monitered what actually happend and kept score. Debka is a intellegence site, not a newspaper. For that I appreciate it, and I realise they may print rumors.

What is the difference between Debka and the MSM? The MSM sometimes prints truth, and speculation along with the rumors, outright lies, propaganda and agenda. Debka only prints truth and rumors, so you do get a lot less with Debka. They don't lie.

Hmmm.... I do think they themsleves make up phony stories from time to time... Or... maybe more likely the people feeding them are doing the creative story telling....

Actually, they are pretty accurate for the rumor mill that is going around in Jerusalem. I highly doubt they are active military intelligence, for if they were, this would obviously be a direct security leak and they would be canned. They do have their ear to the tracks pretty well.

One thing that makes them stand out so bad is that they are a local Israel rumor mill. Their stuff is not blended in with a world view, and because of that sometimes it is pretty stark in contrast. But that is also a strength if you take it for what it is.

They just do not have the punch of a MSM outlet and I have not really spotted them being used to put out disinformation. I think they are small time.

Frankly, I like them, and appreciate their point of view. But just like a good spud, it is not very good without a good dose of salt.

Yeah, right. I would be willing to bet quite a bit of money that maybe 10% of this story is true, and the rest is fabrication.

I, otoh, and millions upon millions of American citizens do care about our President. Your views are in the tinest minority, both in our country and worldwide.

The President is right even when at times he seems wrong to a tiny numerical minority.

In hoc signo vinces.
