The Wages of Spanish Appeasement

After Spain withdrew its 1,300 troops from Iraq in April of 2004, newly elected Socialist prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero urged all coalition governments to follow suit. No sooner would Spanish forces abandon Iraq, Zapatero confidently announced, than the imperiled country would “recover its freedom, stability and sovereignty as soon as possible.”

Fortunately for Iraqis, Zapatero’s advice went largely unheeded. Indeed, the prime minister could not have gotten it more wrong. According to a recently published report in the Spanish magazine Interviú, the situation in Diwaniya and Najaf, where Spanish bases were located and which formerly enjoyed relative calm, grew violent precisely around the date when Zapatero confirmed he would make good on his pledge to bring the troops home as soon as possible. In support of its findings, the magazine quoted internal army reports and military personnel on the ground during the last month of the deployment, after the calendar for withdrawal had been set.

Appeasing terrorists or any criminal only emboldens them.

Siding and placating terrorists thinking it will bring peace is unbelievably stupid as it enables them to become even more dangerous. Because they think you are stupid which of course you are.

The Spaniels surrendered. Now the Arabs have resumed referring to Spain by its Islamist name.

Spain was ruled by Muslims at one point before the Crusades. Obviously, the non-Muslim infidels lived under subjugation and had to pay the tax for being a non-Muslim. If they refused they were killed. This is exactly what they are working towards today.

There are few examples which illustrate the vacuity of the Democratic party's call for withdrawal in Iraq than the post-withdrawal experience of Spain.

Warning against coddling the enemies of the West, Aznar reminded his listeners that “if we want to win, the terrorists must be made to feel our hostility everywhere."

Well said, Prime Minister. Spain is a lesser country without him.

Regards, Ivan

Appeasing terrorists is exactly the same as appeasing a blackmailer. If you pay him off, he'll be back again, demanding more money. And he'll keep it up until he owns everything you have.

This is a little off topic except that it involves Zapatero. Evo Morales, the newly elected Castroite President of Bolivia, just visited Zapatero in Madrid. Zapatero begged him not to follow the Castro-Chavez line (because Spanish companies have very large investments in Bolivia which are at risk.) Meantime, Catalonia on whose deputies Zapatero's majority depends continues to move toward independence. Zapatero finds himself in deep "mierda."
