You apparently have never driven in Pennsylvania. You may have swamps, but we have freeze-thaw cycles and use salt on the roads with every snowstorm. Potholes wherever you drive.

You apparently have never driven in Louisiana. Marsh gas bubbles up from deep below the earth, causing sinkholes in the roads. Brand-spanking-new roads can be suddenly destroyed by a particularly big pocket of gas. There's also the occasional flood.
But I'll take your word for it. : )
