Friedman a serious poliltician? Why not?
San Antonio Express-News ^ | 8 January 2006 | Robert Seltzer

Posted on 01/08/2006 7:44:05 AM PST by Racehorse

"I support gay marriage, and I support prayer in school," he said, sitting in the living room of his cabin in Medina last month. "You know why I support prayer in school? What's wrong with a kid believing in something?"

[. . .]

. . . "What politicians lack is a sense of humor, a sense of reality and a sense of community service. That's what I bring to the party.

"The only time the Democrats and Republicans get off their asses is to attack each other. The Democrats can't get any traction, and the Republicans can't get any legislation. Why the hell not?"

[. . .]

"You take five Mexican generals and give them a bank account of $1 million each," he said. "Then every time a Mexican national gets caught crossing illegally, you withdraw $5,000 from the general responsible for that sector."

[. . .]

"If I'm a rodeo clown, remember it's the clown who saves the cowboy,"

[. . .]

"I don't have many supporters, but the ones I have all own guns."

[. . .]

"I'm going to de-wussify Texas if I have to do it one wuss at a time."

Too bad Kinky supports a few thing I don't and can't.

If it were not for those show stopper issues, like homosexual marriage, I'd vote for him just to shake up the status quo.

I might skip the Republican Primary this year, just so I'm eligible to sign his petition to place him on the ballot.

I like salsa with my politics. Too bad I can't vote for the Kinkster.

Perry a serious poliltician? Why not?

That headline could be re-written this way and it would still be OK. Anyone can run. Kinky, The Haircut...

It's part of America.

:-)
I'm thinking of doing the same thing...skip the primary so I can sign Kinky's petition.

He hasn't got a chance of winning, but him in the race will make it lot more entertaining than just listening to Perry and Strayhorn (and whoever the Dems put on the ballot) chew on each other.

I can just imagine the televised debates, LOL. Bring on the cee-gars!

Have you ever voted for a candidate who you agreed with on absolutely everything? Personally, I don't think it much matters that Kinky supports gay marriage. Legislation in Texas would never pass.

I don't agree about with him about gay marriage either but I still contributed to the Kinkster's campaign because he is anti-illegal immigration. To my mind, that is the second most important issue we face (the first being the War on Terror).

Not since Reagan have I found a candidate I support 100%. If I were in Texas, I'd vote for Kinky because I think MOST of hwat he says is better than most of what the others are saying.

I like the idea about the Mexican generals.

I've just about decided I'll sign Kinky's petition.

Like you say, doubtful he'll have a chance of winning, but the campaign and the general election sure as heck won't be business as usual. Not this year. :-)

Hell, if we got all the half-wits out of politics DC would be a ghost town.

Milton Friedman would be a good politician, not Kinky.

That's why I described my doubts as "show stopping issues."  No candidate will exactly match my political druthers.  There are simply issues which are likely to kill my vote for the candidate.

But, to tell the truth, I'm much more concerned about what the Lt. Governor supports, since in this State he holds the real power.  And, he usually gets to fly low under the radar.

And in the turn do you really think they are going to pass some kind of legislation to stop all the illegals?

The same Kinky that calls Bush a "tyrannical bully?"

And worse of all, he's not funny. He's like Gallagher type of humor.

This is Mexico we are talking about. They would get together and agree to let them all flow in through one sector and split up the money. And this still doesn't address them coming in from other areas. Heck they might not even care about that program. How much money a year do you think each illegal sends back to Mexico?

In my view, Friedman's doing a valuable public service just by making his campaign points. Legislation to halt illegal immigration is very difficult because proponents are immediately demonized as racist by the Left. (And craven politicans are afraid to lose the Hispanic vote.)

We need voices in the public square who aren't afraid of being politically incorrect. That's the only way the rotten aims of social engineering via political correctness can be stopped.

Kinky said he supports gay marriage because he believes "gays should have the right to be just as miserable as straights."

I also like the Mexican General idea. At least let's get the payoffs and corruption right out there in the open. The local papers can do weekly "cash flow" charts.

:-)

I think you got Friedman confused with someone else. Kinky may be largely unfunny, true, but he has never hit a watermelon with a hammer.

I think Texas can count on Kinky NOT to be Politically Correct. :-)

Yep.  Another strike against the Kinkster.

He's one of Willie's buddies.

And worse of all, he's not funny. He's like Gallagher type of humor.

I think he's funny.

And, a lot he says has the bite of uncomfortable truth.

He first grabbed my attention back in the seventies with his band, Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys.  He does know how to grab attention.

Besides, this is the State which elected Ma and Pa Ferguson to the Governorship.  In a campaign to succeed her husband in office, Miriam Ferguson's primary campaign promise was she would always follow her husband's advice, and Texas would be getting two governors for the price of one.  Sound familiar?  :-)

Had they the opportunity and the power, I think the Texas Rangers would have dealt the Fergusons a good dose of frontier justice.

And, this is the State which elected a candidate under indictment to the State Supreme Court.

And, this is the State which elected milquetoast Perry to office . . . again and again.

The Kinkster might be a nice breezy gust of fresh air.  Till he loses.  :-)
