The massive stroke that cut down Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon late Wednesday night not only throws Israeli politics into turmoil. It marks the likely starting point of the coming nuclear showdown that will pit the Jewish state and the Free World against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

I for one, believe that Israel is protected and will come out up front in any issue that concerns the Arabs. They may suffer loss, but they will ultimately win.

Like at Masada?

While Masada seemed like a defeat at the time, like the Holocost, it has galvanized Israel to say Never again.

The Russians have also agreed to sell Iran S-300 anti-missile systems, believed by most experts.

Correction belived by most RUSSIAN experts to be superior. Be so kind as to post a link the source of your post please? Would love to see who is saying this nonsense.

Not only can the US do it. Shaping up that the US can do it from 4 directions while the Israelis have a LONG way to go there and back again.

Please re-read my post #11. I only quoted from the article that this thread is about, and then I made a comment.

"Unilateral Israeli action, without provocation from Iran, could unleash a diplomatic, economic and military backlash such as the Jewish state had never witnessed since 1948, Mr. Sharon argued."

It's amazing how many Americans don't realize this, and how much of a threat that backlash also would be to Israel.

Good piece - reminds me of Krauthammer's style and insight (and that's a compliment!)

Yes, I believe that we should only continue improving Israel's anti-ballistic missile defense systems and let western Europe be confronted by what it refuses to realize.

My concern with that approach is it is based on the assumption that European leaders have the long term interests of their citizens at heart. The European street doesn't care about Iran so their politicians will not give it a high priority. Being intelligent and informed people, they are surely aware that in the middle and long term, say > 5-7 years, a WMD Iran could be a huge threat to their very survival, yet short term, probably a very small one.

So what we will probably have, with regards to the Europeans, is a game of chicken, with them banking on the USA to once more do their dirty work, without not only active support, but probably criticism if not downright condemnation afterwords.

Your compliment is great!

It spurred me to write up my thoughts as an article in my blog, I called it:
"Don't Worry About Iran"

the money quote ...

"The current Iranian regime is highly irrational and has shown signs of being diplomatically clueless, so I anticipate the military option will have to be pulled eventually. But it won't be a crisis, it will be a resolution. "

See my blog article on this:

It won't be a 'crash' - we will have a one night surgical strike that will take out Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The challenge is a diplomatic one, and Iran's stupidity is only playing INTO our hands right now.

I have no special inside information and I'm in the private sector. This is informed speculation based on history and understanding of the players involved and what it would take.

Do tell them the same hard truth I do when they insist on arguing? "You can coexist with such people when one of you is dead. Them or you, choose swiftly."
