I had the privilege of meeting Joshua Sparling's father and brother at yesterday evening's FReep. (History of Joshua here.) They came down to meet us, and Joshua was kind enough to send some candy and other goodies down for our supportive vigil. More details will be in the weekly AAR, but I wanted to touch on one point.
Although the response to Joshua's predicament has been absolutely overwhelming, they have only received six cards - total - from Michigan. Why is that such a big deal? It's Joshua's home. And he's been featured in several newspapers, including Lansing's publication.
I just wanted to put out a friendly request to any Michigan FReepers to send Joshua a card - a belated Christmas card, a get-well or thank-you note, or a simple letter. Just to let him know his home state is aware and appreciative of his family's sacrifices.
Thinking of including a phone card? NO!! :-) His family said they have been completely overwhelmed by phone cards. They're very grateful, but don't need anymore. If you want to include something, FReepmail me for one idea. Thank you for your support, and thanks to JimRob for providing us this amazing forum.
That's lousy. I missed Mr. Sparling's interview. What else did he say?
The box of cookies is on it's way, via Priority Mail. Hopefully you'll get them on Saturday. I just resupplied my pantry, so let me know if and when Joshua needs another batch!
I was so sorry to hear about his father losing his job. I haven't read a thing in the Detroit papers on it -- they're all obsessing about the auto show at the moment -- but somebody needs to get on this.
I just saw this -- there was an article in the Port Huron Times-Herald on 01/01/06 about Joshua. It's all too short but at least his home town made an attempt to get his story out.

I didn't know Joshua was with the 82 Airborne. My grandfather, a WWII vet, was part of the 509th paratrooper squadron. They were absorbed by the 82nd after WWII.
Geronimo!!!
>> And kudos to California and Georgia
California... ?? We got an honorable mention! Hooorah!!
