Iraq - Female Western journalist kidnapped in Baghdad - police
ABC News & Reuters ^ | January 7, 2006

BAGHDAD, Jan 7 (Reuters) - A female Western journalist was kidnapped in Baghdad on Saturday and her translator killed, police said.

They said she was on her way to a meeting with a Sunni Arab leader when a car carrying an unknown number of gunmen blocked her vehicle in the Adel district near Malik bin Anas mosque in west Baghdad.

The gunmen shot dead her driver, an Iraqi journalist who also worked as her translator, abandoned their car and drove off in hers.

There has been a spate of kidnappings of Westerners in Iraq over the past few months after a lull during most of 2005. Four Christian peace activists -- a Briton, an American and two Canadians -- are still being held captive. A French engineer is also being held.

There's a photo of Ms. Carroll at the above link if you scroll almost to the bottom. Perhaps other Freepers with better computer skills than mine can post it directly.

Why any American would allow themselves to be taken alive is beyond me. She apparently considered herself an expert on the people she was reporting on, and knew the risks she was taking. Now she most likely will suffer and die a hideous death for the sadistic amusement of her murderers, carried out in the name of Allah.

The BBC has pulled down all references to the story on their website.

"Several Westerners are already being held hostage by insurgents in Iraq, including an American, a Briton and two Canadians, all members of a Christian peace group. "

I was wondering what happened to them. Still alive ... if anything these "peace activists" are on their SIDE AND SHOULD BE RELEASED.

"It was an American journalist." Gill Kelly, who works for the Christian Science Monitor, was reportedly going to interview a Sunni Arab politican. US and Iraqi troops sealed off the area soon after she was snatched."

IF this is not a hoax ... it doesn't look good for her. They HATE Christians and if she is a conservative one ... she's done.

She's the one. If she had been old and ugly, I'm sure the liberal media would have released her photo already.

Jill Carroll is a liberal reporter. But this situation looks like she was set up by friends of the Sunni terror leader she was planning to interview.

It looks like the liberal media have decided to sacrifice her to their Iraqi "insurgent" friends.

I worry about this woman.

I do too. I feel this whole thing was a setup. A good possibility she was taken by local criminals and will be sold to the terrorists. I think of the poor aid worker who was kidnapped, tortured and killed. God bless her and I hope he is watching over her now.

Have the terrorist beheaded any women who were kidnapped?

See post 31. Kuwait news agency and others have reported her name and that she works for the CSM.

The utter silence of the MSM is deafening and disgraceful. To my knowledge, no major English language news organization had identified the woman kidnapped as Jill Carroll. La Repubblica seems to be the only western newspaper even bothering to cover the story. What is most shocking is the discrepancy between the coverage of this kidnapping and the coverage of other westerners recently "kidnapped," particularly the German woman who was released, and the "peaceworkers" still held. One might think that now that an official member (which this young woman clearly is) of the english-speaking elite media "club" has been grabbed that the story would be front page news. I looked in vain for mention of this story on the on-line version of the New York Times. I am forced to conclude that since the story is a nuisance that interrupts their antiwar agenda, the peril of this young journalist is news that's not "fit to print."

The disgraceful part is that American soldiers are putting their lives at risk searching for Miss Carroll.

And from the Christian Science Monitor: nothing. Those men are heroes. May God guide them and protect them and Ms. Carroll.

The fact she only took a translator does indicate a set-up.

Based on her earlier dispatches, she was most likely disguised as an Iraqi woman when she was kidnapped. This was her standard operating procedure. Pose as the Iraqi wife of her translator. This indicates a setup more than anything else. They were following her and her driver on her way to interview the Sunni terror chief.

How is this a PR nightmare for liberals? A PR nightmare for liberals would be if Iraq became a safe, democratic, wealthy, ally nation of the US. Every death of innocents or US soldiers just makes the libs smile.
