JERUSALEM Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the most powerful Israeli leader in 50 years, has died. He was 77.
Sharon was declared dead by physicians at Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital before 1 p.m. Israeli time [6 a.m. EST], Middle East Newsline reported. Authorities have already been notified of the death, and a government announcement was expected to be issued over the next hour.
Significant improvement being he is brain dead on life support instead of dead.
This is brutal. 3 different surgeries of over 15 hours.
Any medical experts in here. There is a lot of talk about the 2 hour delay from sharon first starting to feel bad to going to the hospital.
If Sharon was being observed at the time he first started feeling ill could that have made any difference?
Any chance they will ever know what caused the hemmorage. Whether the blood thinners caused leakage which caused it or the blood thinners just made the massive bleeding worse?
Disagreement with his policy and actions as to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank is one thing. Who knows? Maybe he was right. Maybe he was not. No one can blame him for failing to try. The Palestinian reaction to his misfortune suggests a rare degree of sincerity and regret and even affection.
In any event, it is unquestionable that he has been a great general, a great patriot and a great leader and that he will be, at the very least, very hard to replace.
May Ariel Sharon's family, his co-religionists and his nation be comforted in their grief over this, his final affliction, and remember him as a source of strength and purpose and inspiration.
LOL! So true, so true...
Sharon never said he would divide Jerusalem. Anyone who looked objectively at the situation in Gaza understood that the settler's position there was untenable and that situation could not continue. I wasn't crazy about the idea but I don't get a say in the matter...the people who do get a say, Israeli voters overwhelmingly supported him. His new party was headed for an election landslide in the next election. That means something. Ariel Sharon was a great man.
His doctors have to answer how they never did a thorough exam on him in 5 years that could have detected that small hole in his heart years ago.
If that had been fixed when he was younger the first stroke would not have occured and he would very likely be working at his desk today.
That first stroke has to be related to this stroke. Either the blood thinners caused leakage or the first stroke injury lead to the cerebral hemmorage.
You're absolutely right, except I am suspicious of your last sentence. Could it be that you know what the answer is, but don't want to say it? The Arabs want to slaughter the Jews...and after the Jews, the Christians and Hindus....and then everyone else... in the meantime, they murder each other. The culture needs to be severly changed or destroyed if the rest of us are going to survive. Ethnically cleansing Jews, as Sharon did, and as he advised Begin to do, empowers the murderers. Would you agree?
I wish Sharon could have done better. While I cannot wish him ill or be pleased with his current situation, I can't forgive him for causing so much pain and suffering to so many innocent Jews. I'm conflicted about that and wish I could feel differently. But I can't.

Needless to say the media are honing the skills perfected in the Katrina and mine disaster coverage. Note the most recent headline posted.
He did say that he wouldn't give up Gaza to the Arabs.
Anyone who looked objectively at the situation in Gaza understood that the settler's position there was untenable and that situation could not continue.
Agreed. And the solution is to throw the Jews out? The same argument could be made for all of Israel. Indeed, many already have made that argument - that Israel should never have been created. There is a right and a wrong here. The right path is the difficult one. Caving in to the demands of murderers is wrong in my opinion.
the people who do get a say, Israeli voters overwhelmingly supported him. His new party was headed for an election landslide in the next election. That means something.
Yes, it does. The Hellinists overwhelmingly supported the anti-Jewish government of ancient Israel....the Macabees won anyway and today we celebrate their victory as Chanukah. Being in the majority doesn't always mean you're choosing the correct moral path, does it?
Apologies to all FReepers.
May God bless and keep this great man Ariel Sharon.
Doesn't look like he's dead yet:

h.a., I really don't know what the answer is. I guess it's the "Million Dollar Question" of the century.
