NIAF TO HOST ITALIAN AMERICAN RALLY FOR JUDGE ALITO IN N.J.
(Washington, DCDecember 20, 2005) The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) will host a rally in support of the Supreme Court nominee, Judge Samuel Alito, Jr., with the Italian-American community in Jersey City, N.J., on Friday morning, January 6. The bi-partisan rally will be held at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson, 2 Exchange Place, Jersey City, in the Manhattan Grand Ballroom at 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Constitutional law experts and fellow attorneys including: Honorable Donald DiFrancesco, former Acting Governor of New Jersey; Justice Marie L. Garibaldi, former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice and member of the NIAF board of directors; Thomas Gentile, Esq., former clerk for Judge Alito and partner with the firm of Lampf, Lipkind, Prupis & Petigrow; and Honorable Frank J. Guarini, former New Jersey democratic Member of Congress and NIAF chairman emeritus, will discuss Judge Alitos qualifications and service to New Jerseys Italian and legal communities. Entertainer Joe Piscopo will also be speaking at the event.
Prominent business executives, Italian American community leaders and leading Italian Americans in government and public policy are also expected to attend the event including: Joseph Alessi, Esq, president of the Center for Italian and Italian American-Culture Inc., and councilman for the Borough of North Cadwell; Hon. Paul DiGaetano, New Jersey assemblyman; and Marty Picillo, Esq. president, Tiro A Segno.
According to NIAF Chairman Dr. A. Kenneth Ciongoli, Judge Alito, whose father immigrated to the U.S. from Italy, is highly respected in the judicial community for his constitutional knowledge and his impeccable character. Judge Alito should not be judged on his ethnicity as is being done in the media and by opposing groups. We are very proud of Judge Alito.
NIAFs extensive efforts in New Jersey included writing Senator Frank Lautenberg and incoming Senator Robert Menendez expressing the Foundations and the Italian American communitys support (1.5 million Italian Americans or 18 percent of New Jerseys population) for Judge Alito. The NIAF also contacted more than 100 Italian American clubs and organizations throughout the State of New Jersey urging grassroots action such as contacts their U.S. Senators to express their support of the Supreme Court nominee.
NIAF is a non-partisan educational foundation. An important part of its mission is to support the nomination and appointment of qualified Italian Americans to federal positions.
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is dedicated to promoting the contributions of Italian Americans. The Foundation has a wide-range of programs that provide scholarships and grants, conferences and cultural seminars. Visit our website at www.niaf.org
Some say they are Catholic but are they? I can amuse myself sometime and say I am REALLY 25 and weigh 110 but not really! lol Same difference!
I was looking at precinct totals in Brooklyn, and it appears that the most pro Bush precincts in NYC are Orthodox Jew (Hasidic?) precincts in Brooklyn, in the 48 assembly district. About 10 of them were over 80% Bush. Staten Island had some precincts in the 70's.
Does not surprise me in the least. The most historically Republican nabes in Brooklyn are Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, both of which voted for Goldwater in 1964. However, at the time, both neighborhoods were heavily Norwegian (Norwegians in New York being staunch Republicans, not unlike their co-ethnics in the Dakotas).
With the influx of Arabs and Chinese into SW Brooklyn over the past 15 years (to say nothing of the established Democratic Irish and Greek populations), I'm sure both nabes are less Republican than in the past, though still more GOP than the city as a whole. I would like to see the returns in areas such as Gerritsen Beach, Bergen Beach, and Windsor Terrace, all of which are heavily Irish-American (and Democratic) which occassionally go GOP in local elections.
It would also be interesting to see the returns in Manhattan Beach (Russian Jews) and Sheepshead Bay (Russian Christians) as well.
Most of the Italians in Brooklyn btw, collect Social Security while their children occassionally visit from suburbia.
The GOP totals are eroding in Bay Ridge. The local Pubbie assemblyman loses the most GOP parts of Bay Ridge now, the ones on or near the bay (marginally), and wins only with Staten Island votes. If you give me Assembly district numbers, I will see if any of the precincts show up as Bush precincts in the other neighborhoods.
Some rather heavy Asian assembly districts (25% or so) seem to post pretty good Bush totals. But maybe few of them vote.
If there was an erosion, I thought it would be in the 21st and 23rd districts, where most of the growing Arab, Latino, and Asian populations of Bay Ridge are concentrated.
There seem to be Bush precincts in all or most of the neighborhoods you mentioned. If you freep me an email address, I will send you a spreadsheet of the Bush precincts sorted by Brooklyn AD, with the "nabes" mentioned.
I think your numbers are state senate districts. The Bay Ridge assembly districts are the 60th, which is the one you mentioned with the Greek guy, and the 46th, where Bush carried 27 precincts, but then the 46th includes a lot of other neighborhoods too.
70.12% 48 Boro Park, Dyker Heights, Kensington, Flatbush 56.69% 45 Brighton Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Flatbush, Manhattan Beach, Midwood, Plum Beach, Sheepshead Bay 54.12% 49 Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, Bensonhurst and Borough Park 49.03% 47 Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights and Midwood 45.87% 60 Brooklyn: Bay Ridge, Fort Hamiliton. 42.05% 46 Bay Ridge, Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Dyker Heights, Marlboro, Sea Gate, high-rises of Brightwater, Luna Park, Trump Village, Warbasse 35.96% 59 Flatlands, Canarsie, Mill Island, Bergen Beach 31.40% 41 Sheepshead Bay, Midwood, Flatlands, Canarsie, East Flatbush 27.27% 50 Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn 27.06% 44 Park Slope, Flatbush, Kensington, Midwood, Windsor Terrace 24.96% 51 Sunset Park, Red Hook, Wyckoff, Gowanus, Windsor Terrace, South of Park Slope, Borough Park, Boerum Hill 15.57% 42 Flatbush, Midwood 12.46% 43 Crown Heights, Flatbush
The top four nabes all have significant Jewish populations. It seems as though Bush did better among the Orthodox and Russian Jews than he did with the white gentiles.
Clearly.
The 46th includes the "Bays" area of Bensonhurst which is heavily Chinese, a group that has been more active in recent elections. The Arabs and Latinos in eastern Bay Ridge (Third Avenue to Fort Hamilton Avenue) are not yet a major factor, as they have been slow to get citizenship.
About time from my fellow Italians to step up to the plate and take position just like the other groups do. What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander!
I would have preferred Joe Pesci and Tony Bennett. Dino would've made the perfect one, God rest his soul in peace!
Orthodox precincts in NYC have been Republican strongholds for many years.
Republicans who should not win in NY, like Al Damato and Rudi Guliani, even Pataki, used to end their campaigns with rallies in those neighborhoods.
But, from what I hear and understand, the Conservative pro Israel Jewish community has soured considerably on Bush. As I have. And likely for the same reasons.
I wouldn't be surprised if as a result Hillary does well, in a community that previous abhorred her, unless the Republican candidate has a solid pro Israel background.
Bump for Judge Alito.
And some even say they're partly Italians, but in name only.
Yes it does!
