The President met with present and former Secretaries of State and Defense in the Oval Office at the White House. The meeting with the bipartisan group was to discuss the war in Iraq.

The President also signed in the Oval Office the Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005

The Presidnet also made remarks to the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education at the U.S. State Department as did the Secretary of State.

As mentioned above Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made remarks to the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education at the U.S. State Department she also had a breakfast meeting at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington and met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the State Department.

President Meets with Current & Former Secretaries of State and Defense The Roosevelt Room January 5, 2006

THE PRESIDENT: It's been my honor to host former Secretaries of State and Secretaries of Defense from Republican administrations and Democratic administrations here at the White House. I've asked Secretary Rice and Secretary Rumsfeld and Ambassador Khalilzad and General Casey to bring these men and women up to date on our strategy for victory in Iraq.

I've also had a chance to listen to their concerns, their suggestions about the way forward. Not everybody around this table agree with my decision to go into Iraq, I fully understand that. But these are good solid Americans who understand that we've got to succeed now that we're there. And I'm most grateful for the suggestions that have been given. We take to heart the advice; we appreciate your experience and we appreciate you taking time out of your day.

We have a dual track strategy for victory. On the one hand, we will work to have a political process that says to all Iraqis, the future belongs to you. And on the other hand, we'll continue to work on the security situation there. The main thrust of our success will be when the Iraqis are able to take the fight to the enemy that wants to stop their democracy, and we're making darn good progress along those lines. Again, I want to thank you all for coming. I appreciate your interest. I appreciate you being such a solid citizen of our country.

The hymn sheet from today, thanks for your prayers they were certainly answered. I will explain below

Wonderful happening today. My dad's dear friend who he has known for over 30 years we did not know he was trying to get to the funeral well he did not make the funeral but he turned up at our house when we arrived back home. The service was lovely dad said it was just how he wanted it to be. Dad did not go to graveside but they had a lean to at the back of the chapel with a seat in it and it was out of the wind and chill and dad sat there and after the formalities at the graveside he just walked down to look at the grave. The Chapel kindly laid on a cup of tea and cakes and scones and then we returned home. We had been back about half an hour when our friend Malcolm who has not visited us probably for over 15 years was at the door; dad speaks regularly to him on the phone though. He had been over to the village where the funeral was but he had gone to Parish Church instead of the Chapel. He does not drive so he had done all this by train and bus traveling something like 80 miles by the time he got to our house. It was an answer to prayer it gave dad something else to think about and even smile about it is so typical of his friend. I managed to get a meal for us including our other friend who drives dad around and does odd jobs for us and then he took Malcolm back to the station to catch the 7.30 train to Brighton (he lives in Worthing, Sussex). Thank you all that prayed or thought about us your prayer was answered in an amazing way. God Bless you all
