Most sexually active teenage girls know relatively little about sexually transmitted diseases until it is too late, according to new research.
In a survey of 300 adolescent girls in the Pittsburgh area, Carnegie Mellon University researchers found that girls who reported having been diagnosed with an STD knew more about that particular disease than other girls, but did not know more about the other diseases.
The findings are published in the January edition of the Journal of Adolescent Health.
On average, with the exception of HIV/AIDS, the teens did not know many basic facts about STDs, said Julie Downs, lead author of the study.
"Our schools have decided to focus on AIDS, and that has come at a cost," she said. "Teens just aren't being taught about these other diseases, and so they may come away with a false sense of confidence."
The study's findings are troubling because teenagers who know little about STDs are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior and to delay the treatment of STDs, the researchers said.
And the consequences can be severe. Genital herpes, for example, cannot be cured. Genital warts can render a woman more susceptible to cervical cancer, and chlamydia can lead to infertility.
"Do they not show those anymore?"
Nope. It's all about "abstinence".
Schools need more money.
"I remember watching those "VD" films in sex ed and they scared the bejeebers out of me. Do they not show those anymore?"
Nope. The anti-sex-education folks have put the kibosh on providing information to kids. Instead, they want kids just to be told not to engage in sexual activity.
That trick never works.
girls can catch it from driving a tractor in your bathing suit
(I learned that on Seinfeld)
Blond Chick: "Wait... You get STDs from having sex?"
Doctor: "Um... Yes."
Blond Chick: "#@@$ that! How come nobody told me that?"
If they don't know about these things in this day and age, it is only because they choose not to or they have some kind of cognitive problems. Helen Keller (bless her soul), being deaf, dumb and blind in life and now dead and buried six feet underground inside a casket and inside a concrete vault is aware of STD's through the unmistakable and relentless propagandizing and amoral agenda of the leftist educational system.
Oh puh_leeez. All they teach is use a condom and everything will be just fine.
Its not all about abstinense. It's mostly about how to put on your condoms.
Sex education cracks me up. We spend YEARS on it now in school, is it any wonder other countries are so far ahead of us in other areas?
I mean, every sexual creature on the planet is BORN knowing how this stuff works, why do american children need years of training? :->
Of course, how long does it take to teach the kids "Just don't do it!"
Are you two saying that US public schools now only teach abstinence, if they teach sex education at all?
I have heard stories of condoms, bananas, and very graphic discussion of homosexual acts being presented to rather young children.
Are these stories myths? Is the sex ed curriculum now nothing by Abstinence?
LOL! Surely you jest, man. Either that, or you are unaware of what actually goes on in publik skoolz.

America is one of the most sexually-oppressed 1st world nations on earth. Watch any Japanese or Euro TV and the commercials there make the most sexually-explicit American stuff look G-rated. Euros seem to have far less hangups about sex than Americans.
You are right, what U.S. needs is to become more like Europe, that will surely solve our problems.
It seems that the label holds the key...
"Euros seem to have far less hangups about sex than Americans."
Is that why the Eurofags are procreating themselves into oblivion??? Same with Japan. The US, for all its sexual opression, is one of the few industrialized nations which is functionally replacing its population.
These days, they just tell girls that you can't get pregnant or STDS if you just "give BJs."
Call it the Monica Lewinsky approach.
Keep telling yourself that.
And, of course, keep treating teens like mindless hormones with feet utterly incapable of self-control.
I don't think the Europeans are great role models for moral behavior. If we don't do something like the Europeans, then that is good.
