Rush made the point that he didn't want to repeal the First Amendment the way the journalists did with the McCain - Feingold, but he did want to hold journalism accountable for caring about being factual.I modestly respond that over the years since 9-11, in this thread, I have done significant First Amendment and economic analysis of that problem.

Maybe it's time to float the idea for true campaign finance reform that is guaranteed to work -- repeal the 17th amendment and eliminate 33 of the most expensive elections that occur every two years.
If we no longer have Senatorial elections and revert back to the Statehouses appointing their Senators, then this money spigot from lobbyists to Congress will dry up. I can't see that kind of money flowing to the House of Representatives who are elected by much smaller populations of voters. Besides, there are 435 of them, which is too many to have effective lobbying during election time, especially with gerrymandered districts. Eliminating the Senatorial elections is the cleanest way to go. Plus, it will restore the balance of power between the people and the states in Congress.
With the politicians being scared by the Abramoff scandal and desperate for face-saving measures, they might be bullied into going for it, since their image will be at such a low point. If you think about it further, additional arguments can be made:
1) The amendment would originate in the House, where it's possible that it might pass. That would leave the Senate looking like obstructionists at a time when they also look corrupt from taking bribes.
2) They can be shamed (?) by asking if they are afraid of facing their own state legislations. If they enjoy the popular votes of their home states, why would they fear not being sent back by those same people's elected state leaders?
That's why I suggest that the time is now to make a push for this. A grass-roots campaign would have to convince the people that the Senate can't be trusted with all the money that is thrown at them, and the only solution is to remove the reason for the money, which is removing the elections that need the campaign financing.
Our government was originally constituted with an appointed Senate. I think that a Senate that is beholden to State legislatures would be less motivated to spend money, or to impose unfunded mandates on the state legislatures that send them to Washington, or to take tax revenues away from the state legislatures that send them to Washington. What good is buying power if the state legislature refuses to send you back? What good is buying power from the state legislature if the local constituents don't vote them back?
It's the Kennedys, Rockefellers, Boxers, et. al., that I'm concerned with, who can fool the people once every 6 years with huge campaign warchests that opponents can't match. If you make these Senators have to make the state legislatures happy, things will be different or the states will send one of their own (who is being groomed for the role) in their place.

This was apparently in a report Ashcroft gave to Congess in June? of 2004. The people were not named in the report. I can't find the report itself.
If so, this is the first example of the Patriot Act being used in this manner. Maybe someone can find a copy of the report. No name, just that is is 29 pages long is all I could get on the fly.
I believe I understand the point you are making by not posting a link to the list of ALL who have received money from Abramoff, but having a list of Dems who also got money without a source won't convince anyone. I'd love to throw the list you presented in the face of some liberals I know who constantly trash President Bush and the Republicans, but when the ask my source, and I tell them MNJohnnie from Free Republic posted it, do you really think a RAT is going to buy that? I hope you reconsider, and post a link to your source. I hate making a claim, being told to "prove it," and not having a source to go to.
