BOSTON -- A Rhode Island man who alleges his wedding ring was stolen while he was clearing security at Boston's Logan International Airport is suing the federal government.
John Wright says he and his wife were taking a flight to Puerto Rico in July when he placed the $7,000 diamond and gold ring in a plastic tub along with his Rolex watch and wallet.
Wright then placed the bin on the scanner conveyer belt as he and his wife passed through the metal detector. Wright says when he retrieved his belongings the ring was missing.
Wright says he suspects one of the screeners took the ring.
A spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration said the agency does not tolerate workplace theft and aggressively investigates all complaints.
Why would he remove his wedding ring to go through security?
I get frustrated at my own husband about this because what I do is, before I ever get to the airport, whether in my hotel room or my home, I take my jewelry, sometimes even a belt, watch, etc., and rather than putting them on only to have to take them off again in an hour, I put them in a small pouch or side-pocket in my carry-on so that I don't have to take them off and empty my pockets right there in the security line.
For some reason, I can't get him to do it, and I have to stand there waiting while he empties all that change that men carry, etc.

Only cheap, costume jewelry sets of the magnetometer. I fly often and have never removed any jewelry or my watch.
That was my first thought. I've been through airport security and never removed my jewelry, just my shoes. :0)
Security has everyone so crazy...a few weeks ago we were going through security, and my husband told me to take off my rings and watch. I knew you didn't have to, but he didn't. I don't think it's unusual to think you have to take jewelery off.

TSA has made it so inconvenient to go through security that I take off everything made of metal, including my eyeglasses (even though I can barely see the metal detector standing there without them) to go through.
Otherwise they see a twitch on the detector and bing, bang, bam, there you are, in your socked feet, being wanded, having someone feel your waistband, etc, etc, etc.

This is stupid and does not pass the smell test - so to speak. Perhaps carrying/wearing the Rolex is to give himself and his story a kind of reasonableness. . .
But Rolex's are not guides to good character nor do they offer any credibility to one's motives.
Exactly. Just keep a Ziploc bag handy, take everything metal off before you get in line, and throw it in your carry-on. I've never had the slightest problem with the TSA, they are always professional and sometimes even polite - remarkable considering how many idiots they have to deal with during the day.
Plus, it's more considerate to those in line behind you who otherwise would have to wait longer.

I've been told to take my wedding ring off more than once going through the metal detector. And mine wasn't big enough to be worth $7,000.
Once I declined. I was told that it was my right, but that I'd get the full wand package and hand luggage search.
