That would seem to be the only reasonable conclusion. Otherwise the loss of the ball could be considered to be a fumble.

What happened when he hit the ground? He dropped it. When any part of you hits the ground, other than your hands or feet, the play is over, that's the rule. Once you're on the ground it doesn't matter if you have the ball or not.
