I remember when Madam Notsobright was sent to the Middle East for some conference and the Arabs thought she was a maid.

Wasn't the mission destroyed when a sand storm in the desert downed our planes and killed our troops?

In inviting all living Secretaries of State and defense, President Bush demonstrates his bias against the respiration-impaired. A look at the list of Secretary of States shows what he'll be passing up.

It was doomed from the beginning, before the sand storm.

Maybe dubbya thinks this is a way to squelch the criticism of the war.

But it also can come off as the man is out of ideas. And that's ridiculous with so much going right over there.

Again, another awkward political move that I can't see how this works in dubbya's favor

Desert One

Finally, with the Iranians showing no signs of releasing the hostages, Carter decided to take a risk. On April 11, 1980 he approved a high-risk rescue operation, called "Desert One," that had been in the works for months.

Though the odds were against its success, the president was devastated when he had to abort the mission due to three malfunctioning helicopters. When another helicopter crashed into a C-130 transport plane while taking off, eight servicemen were killed and three more were injured. The next morning, gleeful Iranians broadcast footage of the smoking remains of the rescue attempt, a stark symbol of American impotence.

I can't even envision a scenario where this works in Bush's favor.

Use your imagination!

Imagine Madeline Halfbright debating with Rumsfeld.

And if they don't accept the invite, well Bush can always say he extended the invitation and welcomed their expertise.

This isn't the sort of thing one goes into and spouts silly partisan talking points. He's cast down the gauntlet. Frankly I see it as a bit of genius.

Unless he has some really, really good news, this is not a good start in 2006 for the President.

He'd better not use the word "victory" too many times during the conference. It might upset Madeline Half-bright.
