Imminent Independent Counsel Report Gets Sliced Up
foxnews.com ^ | January 2, 2006 | Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

WASHINGTON — Potentially explosive allegations from a 10-year independent counsel investigation may never see the light of day due to an appropriations bill negotiation that has some conservatives crying foul.

The final report of David M. Barrett, independent counsel appointed in 1995 to investigate potential felonies committed by one-time Clinton administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros, is tentatively scheduled for release on Jan. 19, Barrett told FOXNews.com.

However, Barrett and others say, thanks to an amendment to the November judiciary appropriations bill, key elements in the final report, which was completed in August 2004 and has been sitting with a three-judge panel at the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. ever since, may be heavily redacted before its release.

"As it currently stands, the report will not be released in its entirety," said Barrett, who didn't want to speculate why or which portions of the report may not be made public. One decade and some millions of taxpayers' dollars later, he said he is disappointed that the report may not reflect his careful and diligent efforts.

"I believe after 10 years and the expense of $22 million, the public has the right to see the entire report and make their own judgments," he said.

As the contents of the report have been sealed, Barrett is unable to offer details, but sources say the most serious of the allegations concerns, in part, the use of the Internal Revenue Service under the Clinton administration to intimidate political foes. The charges in the report could embarrass former members and associates of the Clinton White House, including former first lady and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., say the sources.

"Some people have said it contains some serious allegations, and when people see the report, they can decide for themselves," Barrett said.

This report was completed almost a year and a half ago. Why the delay? Why wasn't it released in August 2004?

So many questions. First, we know democrats would release it why are republicans so stupid? Who is served by keeping evidence of corruption secret? And why are there no indictments if such things occurred?

What ever happened to "We the People..." and "Government of the People, by the People and for the People"???

I call for less revolution because we are facing the same tyranny today that our Forefathers faced in 1776: a government that taxes us to , does whatever the hell it wants with the money and, except for lipservice in election campaigns, does not even pretend to be a representative government "of the people".

Isn't that what the American Revolution was all about?

These are the folks that Fox should be looking for- I bet they are not in a hurry to protect the Clintons.

It was quite awhile back, but I'm pretty sure most conservative pundits and the like were audited. I remember O'Reilly for sure, and Paula Jones for sure. I think Mark Levin too, but I'm not positive.

I don't remember how to spell Mark's FR name.

Grassley knows the entire contents. He should just mail copies out to any constituent who asks.

Republicans get kicked in the crotch and fight back with spitballs

Again that is what this faction of this corrupt "Two-Party Cartel" is supposed to do. It keeps the socialists agenda in power - just what the elites that own Congress want.

Absolutely right to shout up to the Congress. And more importantly, contact the RNC and let them know that unless this finds daylight one way or another, your contribution is over and tell them not to waste a stamp.

Why the delay? Why wasn't it released in August 2004?

There have been a number of threads on it on FR: Google: Barrett Report + Kerry. The WSJ had a couple of pieces (probably referenced in the FR threads). I know Kerry and Dorgan were two of the three who fought to suppress it; I forget the third.

How can we leak the entire version if we cannot get it? Will all the Senators get the complete copy. And if so, who do we have that has the ba@@s to release it. It would not be a leak since it would not be classified, and we would have every right to discuss it on the news and in print. Screw the judges.

O'Reilly was audited multiple times during the Clinton years. He'd be a good one to go after this.

Numerous conservative groups got audited.

If things are redacted to save the hides of the klintons it further reinforces my thought that 2 people have sold their souls to a lower form

The salient point here is that this required a certain amount of bi-partisanship to cover-up. For conservatives, that is more alarming than anything in the report itself. Shall I spell it out? There's a lot of republicans doing hillary's dirty-work here. Who's kidding who?

Shouldn't this be available through a "Freedom of Information Act" request?
