The Senate convened at 8:00 p.m. and adjourned at 8:04 p.m. No record votes were taken.

Yeah that was when the Senate (actually, just Senator Warner) travelled all the way back to Washington (Warner crossed the river from Virginia) to vote (unanimous consent, nobody actually voted. Warner chose not to object to his own motion) to extend the Patriot Act for 6 weeks as the House wanted instead of the Senate's 6 months.

Good job Senators. Glad you're working so hard. Why exactly do we have this second body?

"Over the Fourth of July holiday, delegates worked out a compromise plan that sidetracked Franklin’s proposal.  On July 16, the convention adopted the Great Compromise by a heart-stopping margin of one vote.  As the 1987 celebrants duly noted, without that vote, there would likely have been no Constitution."
