Mexico: Walls won't stop migrants

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- The death of a Mexican man shot by U.S. authorities while trying to sneak into California proves that extending border walls will not curb illegal immigration, President Vicente Fox's office said Monday.

Guillermo Martinez died Saturday in a Tijuana hospital, a day after he was shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent near a metal wall separating that city from San Diego, according to prosecutors in Baja California state.

Authorities said Martinez was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, but may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent.

Baja California Gov. Eugenio Elorduy said in a statement that U.S. officials were investigating the shooting. But U.S. authorities on Monday could not confirm that.

At his briefing with reporters in Mexico City, Fox spokesman Ruben Aguilar said the government "laments and condemns" Martinez's death, and is demanding an investigation.

"This occurrence does no more than provide evidence that only a law that guarantees legal entry and is respectful of human rights can resolve the migratory problem both countries face," Aguilar said.

If we treated Mexicans in our country like they treat Americans south of the border we wouldn't have a problem.

Works for me!

I'll listen to Vicente Fox as soon as he grants US citizens the right to freely migrate to Mexico without the hinderances of border checks and limitations on length of stay and prohibitions on seaside real estate purchases.

Full reciprocity of immigration policy would likely get Mexico to build the fence themselves.

A few hundred thousand rounds of ammunition and a bunch of artillery shells from a squadron of AC-130 gunships can bring peace along our border. Followed by mines and whipped-up big and angry dogs roaming around northern Mexico.

I was told that whipped big dogs scared the hell out of the Nazis in one conflict. Let's see if it still works today.

"Why does our Government continue to bow at the demands of Mr. Fox?"

Methinks Vinny Phocks has a fuzzy vid of GWB doing lines of toot off the belly of a Tijuana stripper in his partying daze..

(just kidding...of course)

They can whine all they want, the fences are going up. The Senate's not going to stop them and neither will Bush.

More noise from the OBL and Mexico in a last-ditch effort (I hope) to keep us from shutting down illegal border crossings. That's a sure sign that we're winning.

I think the way sick and injured American tourists are treated in Mexico ought to get more media play.

Well then, Mr. Fox shouldn't care a bit if we build one, right?

The U.S. needs to do the exact opposite of whatever Vicente Fox says we should do.

They havee very good medical care in Mexico. The passangers in my airplane when I crashed it got excelent care, as good as they could have received anywhere in the US.

For all the U.S. customs agents knew, the "rocks" could have been hand-grenades.

Bad time to play games on commercial jets OR at the U.S border.

LOL! (muchas sonrisas) How reassuring.

Well, I suppose your passengers were able to present a letter of credit. If you're a hiker and you break your leg in Mexico, they won't treat you without upfront payment.

"Mexico: Walls won't stop migrants"

Sure, that's why Mexico's having a stroke over our wanting to build a wall, because it won't work.

If our walls are half as successful as Israel's, they'll be well worth the money.

I'm reading Tom Clancy's, 'The Teeth Of The Tiger' right now. It's a good read. It makes a good case for walls on both borders, if you ask me.

I hope it's made into a movie before the 2008 elections.

Clancy's description of the ease in which 16 terrorists cross our southern border, with the assistance of the Colombian drug cartels, get 16 silenced MAC-10 sub-machine guns and attack 4 suburban shopping malls, in order to run up a body count of American women and children, is pretty chilling.

Nothing of the sort, they were given treatment before they even gave them their names.

Alright:
I've not read the entire thread.
but:

"The death of a Mexican man shot by U.S. authorities while trying to sneak into California proves that extending border walls will not curb illegal immigration...(mexican) authorities said Martinez...'may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent'.

Pretty much tells me we've got a justifiable shooting here...and a marksmanship medal to be awarded.
