Mexico: Walls won't stop migrants

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- The death of a Mexican man shot by U.S. authorities while trying to sneak into California proves that extending border walls will not curb illegal immigration, President Vicente Fox's office said Monday.

Guillermo Martinez died Saturday in a Tijuana hospital, a day after he was shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent near a metal wall separating that city from San Diego, according to prosecutors in Baja California state.

Authorities said Martinez was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, but may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent.

Baja California Gov. Eugenio Elorduy said in a statement that U.S. officials were investigating the shooting. But U.S. authorities on Monday could not confirm that.

At his briefing with reporters in Mexico City, Fox spokesman Ruben Aguilar said the government "laments and condemns" Martinez's death, and is demanding an investigation.

"This occurrence does no more than provide evidence that only a law that guarantees legal entry and is respectful of human rights can resolve the migratory problem both countries face," Aguilar said.

I bet he was more likely firing a weapon (or about to). Rocks aren't likely to draw live fire. When he was hit, his friends left him and took the gun.

Aguilar again attacked the measure Monday, saying "walls and police crackdowns never will resolve migration problems."

Oh yes, they will! You might now like the resolution (your citizens crawling back to your country to die in your hospitals of wounds inflicted to keep them from entering illegally), but the walls and police crackdowns will indeed resolve 'migration problems'.

Ank it's bunk to say that he was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, too.

Simple question:

If it won't be effective, why's he so worried about the idea?...

Those "Silver Bullets" could serve to slow them down enough to use the real bullets on them though.

Authorities said Martinez was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, but may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent.

This article states:

Raul Martinez, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego, confirmed that an agent had fired on a man on Friday as he tried to cross the border near San Diego, after the would-be immigrant had thrown rocks at him.

The unidentified man crossed back into Mexico, where he later died of his injuries in a hospital.

"The Mexican government is demanding an investigation of the facts," presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said at a news conference.

Vincente Fox's economic policy is to send Mexican citizens here and have them send money back home to build the economy. His statements are a reflection of that.

No, Mexico uses the U.S. as a major source of income through remitting pay back to the home country. Furthermore, the Mexican government uses migration as a way to provide social stability in the country. Neither of these policies would end if we had tougher border policies; it's just the cry of lazy people who don't want to do more to get in the country.

So, let me see if I got this straight - Mexico is essentially declaring open war on the US?

Their illegal invasion will be stopped by the citizens of America, since the Federal government, whose job it is to protect our borders, refuses to do it.

Either way, Fox is sinking his own ship.

No illegal alien should ever have a right to anything except a quick ride out of our country!!!!!
I'll guarantee you that Americans from north of the border have no rights in Mexico.
If we treated Mexicans in our country like they treat Americans south of the border we wouldn't have a problem.

Things must be really bad in Fox's Mexico when people will risk death to escape from there.

What does "human rights" have to do with illegally entering the United States or any other country, for that matter?

Mexico is at least coming forward out of their avoidance to prove that, yes, they are motivating, endorsing, encouraging and continually rationalizing illegal immigration. Calling it an issue of "human rights" fools no one but still they carry on with this gibberish.

I'd really love to hear someone ask Vicente Fox and/or spokesperson(s) to define "human rights." To specifically define just what it is and why it's Mexico's right and privilege to gain illegal access and nearly everything else from the U.S. just because Mexico wants it/them.

The significant thing here is that their gain is against the wishes of the people who are paying for their gain and that'd be the U.S. taxpayers. We said no, they don't care, and that makes Mexico an invading force: despite legal preventions, despite citizen objections, despite barricades and common decency, Mexico concludes it will aggress anyway because it's some sort of "right" that they can.

What do we, as a country, do about it?

Wow, Mexicans cross our border by the millions, and one of them is harmed once after attacking a U.S. officer. It is a a veritable Bridge at No Gun Ri redux.

Why does our Government continue to bow at the demands of Mr. Fox?

Our government bows to Big Business, which demands labor at below market wages. Fox is just a sideshow.
