The official magnitude for this earthquake is indicated at the top of this page. This was the best available estimate of the earthquake's size, at the time that this page was created. Other magnitudes associated with web pages linked from here are those determined at various times following the earthquake with different types of seismic data. Although, given the data used, they are legitimate estimates of magnitude, they are not considered the official magnitude.

Wheres the "Bush's fault" part?
7 hours old at the time of your posting.
The tsunami headline is unnecessary, and should have been obvious by that time.
Near the Mayo straights.
Blanco and Nagin seen riding North in stolen school bus!
Well, of course, why didn't they say that. The Mayo Straits, I know exactly where that is (not). LOL!
Thanks for posting. BTTT!

Understandably, people are a bit too focused on tsunamis now.
Tsunami aren't as rare as they were during the incredible 1964-2004 period where they were absurdly rare compared to normal, that people were used to, but they aren't really THAT common, particularly "teletsunami"....ones that cross any appreciable distance.
I wouldn't even begin to start thinking about any sort of real damaging LONG-RANGE tsunami for anything below Mag 8.3 or so. There have been a tiny, tiny, tiny handful for quakes under that magnitude in some special circumstances.
Mag 7-8 quakes underwater are pretty darn common, and only a tiny percentage of them create tsunami at all. This particular quake, in addition to not being that big, was a "strike-slip"...sliding past each other like the San Andreas, not a subduction quake where the sea floor rises and falls, making one even more unlikely.
Thanks!
Right next to the Soda Islands, the Potato Salad Islands, and the Hors D'Oeuvre Islands.
There was a good program on Discovery Channel the other night - they did a piece on the team that took tethered camera subs down the 3 miles or so to the site of the fracture and found sharp-edged escarpments totalling something like 15m high, which would have accounted for the volume of water in the wave(s).
A decently-interesting show when you got past all the hype and 'personal stories' to the real science.
