"Wasn't the CIA driven out of the covert operative business by some Democrat Congress?"
...because they feared that their close ties to America's enemies would be revealed... The dems/liberals are the 5th column.
Back in my day, the Presidio turned out some pretty good linguists, Get them to turn out more.
Plus, that was one of the main reasons I said to hire on people that had to flee their opressive governments: Languages, contacts AND knowledge of the culture. That will beat an ivory tower education every time.
Military also had great communications people. I hope that is still true.
Sorry to hear you are a political scientist. Maybe you could leverage it into a Masters in something useful ;-)
Yeah, I paint with a broad brush. Sign of a mind incapable of nuance, I'm sure. No offense meant to you as an individual.
The CIA is a complete shambles, now reduced to sanctioning rogue operations (see: Plame/Wilson) to try to fix Presidential elections and smear pro-capitalist Republicans. The CIA's activities have become decidedly anti-American, as the organization works in cohoots with the Soviet State Department to help the Democrat Party foist a Euro-style, secular socialist welfare state on America.
The CIA is a disgrace, it's counterproductive, and it should be closed down for good.
Let the DIA and the NSA take over the whole intelligence-gathering mission.
The Church Committee rings a bell
"Why does it take a decade to fire the useless political people (Plame, Clarke etc), and hire guys who know what they are doing and don't run to the NY Times when they don't get their way?"
It's not like hiring cashiers for WalMart.
You have to find people who are not only squeaky clean, but have the intelligence and bent for the job, then you have to train them, and then they have to get some experience.
Plus, you have to have somebody with experience to train them...
"Plus, you have to have somebody with experience to train them..."
I think you could probably find some, but you'd have to look outside government.
I thought you might find this interesting with the references to intelligence.

Goss is sweeping out over there as fast as he can.
"Goss is sweeping out over there as fast as he can."
Good.
What's your source?
Clinton, who didn't even bother to meet with the head of the CIA for several years. He and Hill felt operatives/spies were nasty and dirty. All we needed was a couple of satellites.
Chertoff was absolutely wonderful during the Clinton impeachment hearings.
Right. Doesn't your skin crawl? When I think of the 8 years we endured, I don't know how we stayed sane. Well, in my case it was finding FR.
Middle East intelligence functions out of their cultural norms - information is passed from trusted family member to trusted family member to trusted in-laws to trusted family member etc. (Son to father, father to brother, brother to brother, to wife, wife to sister, sister to husand, husband to brother, etc) It's a great system in a world where the wrong thing said to the wrong person can result in death. Our systems aren't comparable. The best way to get reliable information in that region of the world is to be a family member. The CIA needs to connect these dots -- from them to us, from us to them...
And 9 months later we have 9/11. The press and Democrats blame Bush's purging of intelligence for the attack and we end up with Hillary in 2004 for Prez.
We have had 60+ years of the Marxists/statists entrenching themselves in our government. Short of a revolution taking place, cleaning them out will not be overnight, but ebb and flow. I hate that fact as well.
I agree that is a total waste and not what we pay taxes for them to do with our money!
A friend "inside"
I don't know how these guys contracts work or what not, but it looks to me like Goss wants the deadwood to quit and is doing everything he can to make the undesirables resign.
I don't know if he is handstrung over his ability to fire, or what the reasons are, but he is trying to force people out and bring better people up and in.
