CRAWFORD, Texas For six days, President Bush has stayed in nearly complete isolation on his ranch here just mountain-biking and brush-clearing, the White House insisted daily, and seeing only one visitor, his mother-in-law, Jenna Welch. He never even ventured into this little town of 600, not even to the cheeseburger joint that he often uses as a political tool to show that he is in touch with his neighbors.
But on New Year's Day, after a brief stop at an Army hospital in San Antonio to visit wounded soldiers, Bush is scheduled to return to the White House earlier than usual from his break and start a campaign to set the tone for 2006 and, perhaps, the remainder of his presidency.
As part of an ambitious strategy the White House has mapped out for the next four weeks, Bush has scheduled two major speeches one on the economy on Friday in Chicago, another on Iraq ahead of the State of the Union address, which is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 31. By the time he appears before Congress, Bush's aides are hoping, two of the immediate challenges the president faces the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. and the permanent renewal of the Patriot Act will be behind him.

I don't see that being done at all. What I do see is a lot of people attempting to reconstitute the old 1930's style far right populism that the nation has rejected time and time and time again. You don't have a quarrel with me, or with those who wish to defend the President. You have a quarrel with the nation.

This must be where Ceci Connelly got her inane talking point for yesterday's Fox Sunday show. What part of deciding that Monday can be a work day, even if he is a "federal employee" is called returning early. These reporters have to have something to moan about. Whoever were detailed to Christmas Week in Crawford were underworked. That W did not keep them there for one day longer is a cause to moan? How weird!
Reagan Man, you're a good name-caller, but you are far more guilty of what you accuse others of than are those whom you accuse.
You haven't offered a single fact. You only offer your own opinions, and lash out at others who question you.
I'm still waiting for a rational response. Why did you use a Kristol opinion to draw a conclusion about the President's 'lousy legacy' without basing that opinion on any facts?
Please answer without mindless insults. I think for myself. Always have. Always will. Try it yourself...........answer the question.
Give evidence of Reagan's success in shrinking the government, please.
Answer this question, please. Are you a moral conservative?
This article could be used in a grammar school to teach children how to use suggestive wording. The writer is just so transparent. Your highlighting would be very helpful.
Where's his mom and dad these days? I thought they always were together sometime during the holidays?
Where ya going?
Your post is ridiculous. In the early days of the Bush adminsitraion we use to be on the same side. Now that Bush has shown he's a big government Republican, a liberal spender who never veto'd anything, who doesn't give a rats arse about illegal immigration, you still support him on those issues. Well, I don't.
Btw, whose imploding?
Wrong. I have a quarrel with anyone who opposes traditional conservatism and traditional American values, as espoused by Free Republic. Period.
I see we've been given a new name -- Bush Attack Pack. I guess Bushbot and other attempted epithets didn't work. ;-)
I thought I was the only one who liked those movies.
I am an unabashed Bush fan and proudly so. He is a good man, as opposed to any Democrat, period. He is generally conservative and is passing some conservative policies through stealth, just as most of the leftists policies came into existence. He is attempting to reverse those policies although it is a big uphill battle.
Today we, and Bush and the Republican Party, are up against the Democrat/Communists agenda which has as it goal the demise of our society and system of government. That is the most serious thing we face.
On their side are the MSM, the labor unions, the NEA and our education system, the trial lawyers, most of the federal bureaucracy, much of the State Department, FBI, and CIA, the Islamists, the Russians and Chinese, the international mafia and drug dealers, the opportunistic rinos like McCain, Hagel, Specter, Graham, the openly liberal Republicans like Snowe, Collins, Chafee, Shays, etc., and the entire Democrat Party and their fellow travelers like Soros with all his Communist money to use to try to overthrow our government. That is a lot of money and influence.
On our side - common sense, most of the American people, the internet, and talk radio. Sounds like David verus Goliath, doesn't it?
In addition to fighting with a short stick we also have Democrat moles and harping whiners like you. You may think you are a conservative but you are at best a useful idiot of the left. Your insistence on purity in the light of political reality is an example of the perfect being an enemy of the good.
How do you define "traditional American values" and "traditional conservatism?"
Give us an example of when you defended him.
That's why it is so highly repugnant when ill-informed Bush bashers like Reagan Man, USE the name of this great leader to spread their own ignorance and bias.
I have before me "The Reagan Record."......a 2006 calendar of the Reagan legacy, and this is what it says.....
January......... The Reagan Record on Fighting Crime
February....... The Reagan Record on Illegal Drugs
March............ The Reagan Record on Welfare Reform
April............... The Reagan Record on Lowering Taxes
May................ The Reagan Record on Economic Fairness
June............... The Reagan Record on Liberating Grenada
July................ The Reagan Record on Peace Through Strength
August........... The Reagan Record on "Reaganomics"
September........ The Reagan Record on Entrepeneurship
October......... The Reagan Record on The Reagan Doctrine
November....... The Regan Record on The Cold War Victory
December........The Reagan Record on One Nation Under God
Remarkable similarities between the great man who led us in the 80's and the great man who leads us now, aren't there?
Even the Reagan folks promote those similarities. (And I don't see anything about his 'legacy' on immigration or shrinking the government).
The legacy of George W. Bush will only be 'lousy' in the minds of the perverse left, and the confused, ignorant extreme right.
Those of us who bother to educate ourselves, know the truth.
(He said he enjoyed defending him when he was right.)
Here, here. Some of us realize we are in a fight to the death at this juncture. We have passed a point of no return in dealing with both terrorists and treasonous Democrats. Realpolitick is neccessary in the current paradigm-like it or not.
Well said.
When one is reduced to silly name-calling to 'defend' one's position, it's probably best to leave, eh? A touch of wisdom on his part, ya think?
