"He already ruined his relationship with the US by giving us the finger in Iraq. Not playing his cards well."

Eventually he's going to find himself completely isolated. Except for maybe Moldova LOL.

I have read that Khrushchev was in fact Russian by birth, but his wife Nina was Ukrainian. She spoke the language fluently and he did not, but he often pretended to be Ukrainian after Stalin put him in charge there. And, as you say, he was responsible for drawing the borders which mixed the Ukrainian population in the west with the Russian population in the east.

Ukraine should simply raise the pipeline transit charges to make up the difference.

This is disinformation on your part. The Russians offered to sell the gas to the Ukraine for $160 per 1,000 cu meters, and to increase the transit fees they pay the Ukranians from $1.00 to $1.75 to help offset the increase. The Ukrainians rejected this offer, and DEMANDED transit fees of $3.00 per 1,000, which in effect would give them the Russian gas for free.

All of eastern Ukraine is a mix of Russian/Ukrainain populations but in truth, these are two subbranches of the same eastern slavic or Rus peoples (actually the Rus are a mixture of slavic, ugric, finish and norse tribes. Present day Ukraine was the center of the Rus. Moscow was a minor city located between the 1st (Kiev) and 3rd (Vladimer) cities and Novgorad was the second (formerly first) city of the Rus. Parst of modern day Poland (Galicia) was known as the land of the Black Rus (just like Belarus is the land of the White Rus and was actually once called Ukraine or The Edge and the Vladimer (Moscow) Rus were called the Red Rus)

The most interesting aspect of this is that modern Ukrainian nationalism, centered on Lvov, is a product of Austro-Hungarian creation of the 19th centuary, just like Montenagrin (Serb) nationalism (vs the regular Serb). Both were created to keep the peoples loyal to the Hapsburgs and not to wish to join the Russians & Serbs.

The Russians are raising gas prices on everyone, in order to take the money, and to threaten them politically.

Well that's one possibility, but lets explore another, shall we? Gas is in short demand, at all time high prices and the Russians want to get the most out of their assets in what is dasterdly called the evil Capitalism. So maybe that might explain why they've raised prices on their allies like Armenia and Belaruss and the Italians and Greeks? Hmmmm, interesting isn't it? And then, on top of that, the idiot Oranges and Saakashvili's Roses pissed on Russia and thus ended Russia's foreign aid.

But that makes to much sense, so we'll ignore it.

Natural Gas, Nerve Gas - its all the same to the Kremlin.

Obviously you're an expert on its effects. Your posts show it. But most people tend not to breath in to deeply.

Reagan was a genius to have predicted this Russian Backstabbing move.

I agree with what Russia is doing. OPEC cuts/raises oil production too, in an effort to influence the prices. Why should Russia have to sell it's gas to a country hostile to them for less than what the market value is.

spanalot, nerve gas is a weapon, often used by people like Saddam to gas the Kurds. Natural gas is what powers electrical plants, etc. There's a huge difference.

Not in his mind. He blames Russians, as in the race of people, for all the crimes of the Soviets. There's a term for that kind of irrational hatred which ignores the tens of millions of Russians killed by the Soviets.

That's the Russian view, which is easily identified by the seemingly chronic xenophobic paranoia- sure, the west created Ukrainians. Shevchenko, the greatest Ukrainian patriot, has never set foot in Galicia but was "home grown" in the Russian Empire. Most of the Ukrainian romantic writers of the 19th century or the officials running the Ukrainian National Republic in 1918 never been in Galicia, yet they were "infected" with that same Ukrainian nationalism.
