This is wonderful for him. Some things in the story give me pause however. Getting up and down off the floor, doing crunches, getting on a bike (just sitting on the bike even), doing calisthenics, a conversation 'on the stairs', and THEN in six months he is at 430. What? He was doing all that at 450-600 lbs?. This story is too slick somehow. I think the reporter who wrote this did not stop to think about it. But congratulations to him and I'd love to see the pictures, too.

I see he lost 150 lbs in six months! Now that is a feat, I think when you are that heavy, just walking around would use up tons of calories, just think, each step you may be be lifing a 150 lbs.
He lost most of it at first and tapered off so unlike some others with suspicions, I believe!
Thanks for the pics RG, quite inspiring after a holiday season. Now time for my own diet!

He must have an enormous amount of loose skin after losing that much weight. Getting that stuff trimmed off in a cosmetic surgery procedure would probably lose some more weight for him.

What a great post for today. So many people will say they are going to lose weight, get in shape....for real this year....then 5 days later they are sitting on the couch eating crap again. This mans story is inspiring because it is such a simple solution....all it took was will power & determination.
Here is my question.....I have an obese family member....should I email her this story?

Maybe THIS explains it in basic terms for most of us. Get out the calculator.
"A fast and easy method to determine calorie needs is to use total current body weight times a multiplier.
Fat loss = 12 - 13 calories per lb. of bodyweight Maintenance (TDEE) = 15 - 16 calories per lb. of bodyweight Weight gain: = 18 - 19 calories per lb. of bodyweight
This is a very easy way to estimate caloric needs, but there are obvious drawbacks to this method because it doesn't take into account activity levels or body composition. Extremely active individuals may require far more calories than this formula indicates. In addition, the more lean body mass one has, the higher the TDEE will be. Because body fatness is not accounted for, this formula may greatly overestimate the caloric needs if someone is extremely overfat.
For example, a lightly active 50 year old woman who weighs 235 lbs. and has 34% body fat will not lose weight on 3000 calories per day (255 X 13 as per the "quick" formula for fat loss).
In simple terms, if I multiply my present weight by 15 or 16, this is how many calories I will need daily to SUSTAIN my weight. Reduce the calories, and I lose..Add calories and I gain. The more calories I burn, the faster I lose..it's simple :)
