NEW YORK -- There was more to celebrate than the ball dropping in Times Square for Dick Clark _ the personality who's been ringing in the New Year for decades made his first television appearance since a stroke in late 2004.
Clark, sitting behind a desk with the street scene in the background, sounded hoarse and occasionally was hard to understand, but he said, "I wouldn't have missed this for the world."
"Last year I had a stroke," he explained. "It left me in bad shape. I had to teach myself how to walk and talk again. It's been a long, hard fight. My speech is not perfect but I'm getting there."

I'm thinking that showing the kiss was not really planned. They did seem to cut away awkwardly. However, like you said , it was a slurpy smacker and was a bit embarassing IMHO. I'm thinking they just thought maybe it should have been more private and cut away to something else as filler. I was assuming, due to the "passionate" look of it, that the woman was his wife. If not, then the awkwardness may have been stroke related.
It was painful and a bad idea. I grew up near Philly and remember when Dick was pressed into service at Bandstand after Bob Horn gat caught with some underage girls. Then Dick was young and boyish. At 76 he's too old for this duty even without the stroke. Celebrities just can't seem to quit. They start believing their publicists.
ABC just wanted the ratings. Next year, if he's around, he won't be seen I bet when they add up all the negative reactions.
I gave my step-father credit for his courage after his stroke, but that was private. A performer needs to meet the performance standard. Dick can't and didn't.

Clark IS "retarded", that is, handicapped. God willing he can recover from the effect so his stroke , at least to the extent that Kirk Douglas did. Ironic that the man who "never aged." must now suffer in such a way.
The closest I found was the live concert by the New York Symphoney. "Purdy" darned good job was done by all. Happy New Year.

I don't think some people realize how much courage and will it takes one to make a come back and how sad it must have been for him to have life cut in an instance...
But this is the butral fact that some in media (get off on faultfinding, guess to fill a void in their world!)
Those who undermind or feed off of tearing down others used to be labled as dig a hole for themselves...but today we live in a world where right is wrong and wrong is right!
There 95% of the people who don't sanction this kind of behavior but some how it seems these kinds of people get hired and the rest of us have to endure their presents!
Until prayer and character is part of our shcools curriculum this Babylon ignorances will continue!
I watched part of the telecast and after getting over the shock of how he sounded, he sounded quite well for a man who had a stroke. He looked like his old self, also.
It just shows you how some folks feel uncomfortable with those who don't meet their standards of who should be allowed to be a part of a universal event...

I was at a New Year's Evev dinner, so I missed it all. But I can't believe they foist all these aging rock stars on middle America. Duran Duran? They stunk way back when. Sounds like Dick Clark was a freak show. Probably helped the ratings. Sad...
I can't figure out why Mariah Carey, who makes millions, always looks like a cheap hooker. Can't she hire a good stylist?
I think it is very telling how this thread has gone. There is little respect for human dignity in all its phases these days. I don't care if Dick Clark has a big ego, if that's what people want to think of him, then so be it. I see a good man who has done so much for his industry, and I'm glad to see that some still see value in that. I wish Dick Clark well in his continued recovery.
