The Justice Department inquiry could extend into all branches of the federal government
WASHINGTON The Justice Department disclosed Friday that it was investigating who had leaked classified information about President Bush's top-secret domestic spying program paving the way for a potentially contentious criminal probe that could reach high into the White House, Congress and the courts. Several U.S. officials familiar with the investigation which is in its infancy said it would be conducted by FBI agents trained in probing national security and counterintelligence matters.
The officials said the investigation would focus primarily on disclosures in the New York Times that Bush had authorized the National Security Agency to conduct surveillance on people in the U.S. without getting warrants from a special federal court established to approve them.

It could be McCaniac... but although he's crazy, he ain't stupid. Somebody is going to do time over this... and not just 'Miller-time'.
ESPECIALLY Durbin and Rockefeller. They'll be "perp marched"--if not several staffers working for these two Senators will do the same. I think we might see Kennedy announce he won't run again if this scandal takes out the Democrats big time.
These clowns at the New York Times should thank God it's Bush in the White House now, and not Lincoln.
I agree totally and I think as long as the info was contained, they did not want to indict anyone and expose the program. Now that it is public, they can go public with the investigation.
I find it interesting that it could include the judicial branch.
What does WOT stand for? Is it "With out Thinking? I've tried looking it up but the response doesn't fit the content of the message. Thanks for your help.
Whomever is implicated they NYT MUST be included since they openly and wantonly published information intentionally to bring down our national security. The worm "Pinch" Shulzberger and the Benidict Arnold reporter scamming a book must be frog marched bare foot over broken glass to the closest prison bath house.
I can't believe how petty these people are. I read here on FR the other day that politics is all about power. Guess that explains it.
Back in 2002, McCain was quoted as saying leaks were just a "game" to gain political advantage. He didn't seem concerned at all that it was happening.
There's always hoping.

This is a link to a .pdf of the letter that was sent to Senators Roberts and Rockefeller, and Congressmen Hockstra and Harmon of the Intelligence Committees on Dec 22. by William E Moschella, Assistant Attorney General
The letter, which cites many relevant statutes, stresses the word "reasonableness" -- as in "Intercepting communication into and out of the United States of persons linked to Al Queda in order to detect and prevent a catastrophic attack is clearly reasonable." [Page 4, paragraph 4]
The best part about all of this (and there isn't a best part when security is compromised) is that my Liberal friends are seeing right through the MSM spin machine now. Bush needs to stay on the offensive throughout the year.
I forgot to point out that the word "catastrophic" was in the same sentence.
The MSM is up to their 'stinkin, tratorous necks in this... and they will now be FORCED to report it!
Well, duh!
Thick like a brick.
Time for many to walk the plank.
Plankwalkers. That's what I'll call them from now on.
With a big smile : >
"Thick like a brick."
Thick as a brick. And yet, neither phrase carrys the true depth of the situation.
