Ay, Chihuahua — pack of dogs assaults officer
Oakland Tribune ^ | Dec. 30, 2005 | Ben Aguirre Jr.,

The holidays tend to present police officers with even more than the usual smorgasbord of calls. Sometimes the officers get dispatched to family arguments fueled by alcohol, to incidents in which gifts are stolen and to vehicle crashes involving those who imbibed too much of the holiday spirits.

And then there are shifts such as those Union City and Fremont officers dealt with Wednesday night and Thurs-

day morning.

A Union City bus driver was hit in the forehead with a rock after arguing with patrons about unpaid fares, a burglar broke into a Niles home and added pornography to a computer screen-saver, and a Fremont officer was attacked by a group of Chihuahuas — we're not making this up — while escorting a teenager home, police said.

The first incident happened about 6:45 p.m. when three friends got onto a Union City Transit bus at Alice Way and Regents Boulevard. Two of them failed to pay their fares, Lt. Kelly Musgrove said.

The driver confronted the pair and ordered them off the bus, Musgrove said.

After all three men left the bus, the rider who paid his $1.25 fare threw a rock at the driver from 20 feet away, Musgrove said. The driver was not seriously hurt.

The rock thrower, who is being sought for a charge of assault with adeadly weapon, was described as a 20- to 22-year-old African-American man who is 6 feet tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He wore a black sweat shirt and black pants and had a goatee, Musgrove said.

Several hours later, Fremont police received a call from a 36-year-old Niles resident who said someone had broken into her house and used her computer, Detective Bill Veteran said.

The woman woke up about 1:15 a.m. and found the stranger typing away, Veteran said.

When officers arrived at the Stonebridge Drive home, they found that a window screen had been slit and the window forced open, and the intruder had changed the computer's screen saver to "erotic Indian art," Veteran said.

Nothing was reported stolen from the house, and neither the woman nor her 9-year-old daughter was hurt, he said.

About two hours later, a police officer was attacked by five Chihuahuas as he escorted a 17-year-old boy home after detaining him in a car stop, Veteran said.

The officer suffered only minor injuries to one ankle when the dogs rushed at him after the front door opened. He was able to return to work after 11/2 hours at a local hospital.

It was the third time in two weeks that a Fremont officer had been bitten by a dog, the detective said.

On Dec. 14, an officer responding to a rollover vehicle crash was bitten on the hand by the driver's dog, and three days later an officer working overtime was bitten by a pit bull as he was making a warrant arrest, police said.

Neither of those officers was seriously injured.

My male minidachshund nipped my son on the ankle last year but only because he was dreadfully provoked. He barked and barked, explaining that the 'girls' were his 'girls', the house was his territory, but my son, at 6'4, and visiting for the first time in several years, bent down and yelled at Noodles to stop, wagging his finger in the dachsie's face. Finally Noodles had enough and nipped him on the ankle. Didn't draw blood, just administering frontier justice. I was very pleased. My son should have known better.

Hey, our former "wiener" dog came pretty close to gutting a German Shepherd on two occasions. Each time she was pretty chewed up (near head to tail bandage once) but she didn't have any important stuff sticking out! After the second time when she decided she needed to kick some big dog ass, she'd get about half way to it and then pause and turn around to make sure Pops was chasing after her to bail her out... :-)

Forget the pit bulls. License dachsunds and Chihuahuas. Little buggers are MEAN.

All the years I worked for AT&T as a Repairman...the most vicious were Dachshunds...Forget the big dogs.....

I really don't remember how many tetanus shots I received as a result...Dachshunds are protective, fast, and know where the ankle of the telephone man, delivery person, mailman, or meter reader is located.

I once heard a comedian say that the Chihuahua is the product of a Nazi experiment. It's a genetic cross breed between a piranha and a rat.

I would never admit to other officers that I was injured by a pack of Chihuahuas.

Your son must be far more patient than I.

I would have gone for three points - right between the uprights.

Beware a pack of puppies.

Sounds like an excellent title for a movie.

The people that bought the house I grew up in had two dachshunds named...wait for it...Buttons and Bows.

Those dogs overcompensated for those names. Meanest, nastiest dogs I ever knew, including Chow Chows and pit bulls. They loved to hide under cars, then dart out, bite you on the ankle below your pant cuffs, and dart back under the car to avoid being punted.

I love all dogs...except those two.

I was going to ask her if her excuse for a dog exploded when her son went for 3!

I had one of those dogs come after me when I was jogging. It came in from the front quater for about 50 yards to attack me as I jogged on a public street. I dodged the first attempt, and nailed it as it swung around on a reattack.

It looped a couple of times before hitting the ground, and as I continued my run, I could hear the owner crying, "You attacked my dog!"

Yep - after it came across 50 yards of public park & street, and then made a second attempt to bite me!

Had a "little yapper" run after me on a public sidewalk today. It never actually tried to bite so I just kept going and thought to myself that it wasn't the smartest dog in the pack because it was right in front of my dominant leg and would have been an easy field goal... Glad to know that someone actually nailed one of the nastier animals that really deserved it.

We have leash laws and the antinomian owners just ignore them. They also just leave their pet's fecal material on the sidewalks. Really annoying having to dodge it (as well as the ice this time of year...)

My first encounter with wild ,and I assume at one time, had been domesticated dogs,I was amazed at the total differences of all the dogs in general.Of a pack of approx.,10 to 15,the differences in the breeds were amazing. From the smallest to the largest[a Great Dane],they acted as one.To hunt and kill is their way of life. And they do have a chain of command. The one I saw had a wiener dog as the Alpa male!!They were never out of my sights until they were gone.At first glance, they seemed like nice dogs.’At first glance’.Watching them kill and eat another dog,in a not so nice way, changed that. Many States have a law that stipulates,if you see a group of dogs running down a wild animal, whether it is your dog or not, shoot to kill the dogs.As sad as it it,when dogs go feral, they do not go back. They will come home and act like nothing happened.
