The effort President Bush authorized shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, to fight al Qaeda has grown into the largest CIA covert action program since the height of the Cold War, expanding in size and ambition despite a growing outcry at home and abroad over its clandestine tactics, according to former and current intelligence officials and congressional and administration sources.
The broad-based effort, known within the agency by the initials GST, is compartmentalized into dozens of highly classified individual programs, details of which are known mainly to those directly involved.
GST includes programs allowing the CIA to capture al Qaeda suspects with help from foreign intelligence services, to maintain secret prisons abroad, to use interrogation techniques that some lawyers say violate international treaties, and to maintain a fleet of aircraft to move detainees around the globe. Other compartments within GST give the CIA enhanced ability to mine international financial records and eavesdrop on suspects anywhere in the world.

A "former CIA officer". That's all we get. Probably some mistfit who was kicked out.
When you fish with a fine meshed net you catch it all.
I think it's time to reinstitute insane asylums...
How about domestic AlQaeda? Doesn't that go to the crux of the problem, to wit: fight a global war everywhere except inside the USA because of Constitutional protections?
Exactly. How wiretaps are conducted in domestic circumstances is the meat of it.
In fact, I also think of it this way: If we allow such taps domestically (sp?), do you want a Dem President (Hillary) to have that legal capability? You think 900 FBI files was an outrage...
I have not expected privacy of communication using electronic or electric devices for decades. It's not about legal capability, it's about techinical capability.
Bill & Hillary Clinton wouldn't care about the legalities, and their media would cover their back.
Legalities only apply to right-wingers.
The best way to fight AQ us to keep democrats out of the White House.
Correct. The point I am trying to make is: if the law allows domestic wiretapping without sufficient legal cause, Hillary and crew would be even more emboldened.
It is obvious the old CIA system didn't work as it didn't detect 9/11 under Clinton....
Yes, our war on terrorism is shaping up into another Vietnam. Just as it was in Vietnam, the Democrat Party and the liberal-left MSM had rather see our soldiers killed and our country defeated than to allow a Republican President to receive credit for defeating our enemy.
How much longer can we allow such treason to go unpunished?
There is a new thread just up....announcing that DOJ is investigating these leaks. At least that is some progress....wouldn't it be fun to see Dana Priest and those guys from the NYTimes spend New Year's Eve in jail? Tee hee. I look forward to watching the press have hissy fits about this investigation. I want them jailed NOW, the reporters and the leakers. NOW. Happy New Year! :-)
We all know by now that Hillary and Der Schlickmeister don't play by the rules ANYWAY (which explains the 900 illegally obtained FBI files), so why even worry about that? We're fighting for our very lives here, and that's what we need to focus on. The here and NOW. These leftists/socialist traitors are trying their damnedest to undermine, destroy and defeat Bush and this country's democracy in the process. We have to concentrate on stopping the enemy WITHIN (the leftist/socialists like Kerry, Kennedy and Klinton) first, before we can stop the terrorists from without. It's just 'that' simple. If nothing else, these latest media leaks have made that fact blatantly apparent. And we've also got to stop allowing Dems to get off with a slap on the wrist (like Sandy Burgler) when they are caught. The Dems sure as hell don't reciprocate re: that sentiment. They repay us by wanting Rep heads on a stick without proof, without trial and without conviction. They assume Reps are guilty before even charged and they've made lame accusation after lame accusation against Bush and his administration. Is there really any doubt about who our REAL enemy is here?
"In fact, I also think of it this way: If we allow such taps domestically (sp?), do you want a Dem President (Hillary) to have that legal capability? You think 900 FBI files was an outrage..."
The only thing that worked under Clinton was Monica.
"It is obvious the old CIA system didn't work as it didn't detect 9/11 under Clinton...."
