One judge gets it

If anyone has his hand on the pulse of America, it's Judge Richard F. Suhrheinrich of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. Writing for a three-judge panel, Judge Suhrheinrich, a Reagan appointee, said Mercer County, Ky., must be allowed to post at its courthouse copies of the Ten Commandments, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, the words to The Star-Spangled Banner, and other historical documents. The county had no expressed religious purpose in its display, he wrote, and the Commandments are not more prominently displayed than the other documents.

That view certainly is within the American mainstream, but Judge Suhrheinrich took it a step further by expressing widely held views of the American Civil Liberties Union. He said he's had it with the ACLU's "tiresome" arguments about the "wall of separation" between church and state: "Our nation's history is full of governmental acknowledgment and in some cases accommodation of religion." The ACLU, however, has exploited Thomas Jefferson's words to further its campaigns of forbidding public acknowledgment of America's religious heritage and essentially privatizing religion.

What harm is caused by displaying the Commandments? They advocate mainstream values such as honoring one's parents, and admonish stealing, killing, lying and adultery. It's true they speak of one God, but it's the Judeo-Christian God to whom 8 in 10 Americans pray. Atheists, agnostics or adherents to non-Judeo-Christian religions comprise the rest of the population. None is apt to convert to Christianity just because of a humble display of the Commandments on public property.

Judge Suhrheinrich had one more astute observation: The views of the ACLU do not represent those of a "reasonable person." It's an assessment that startled only ACLU officials.

I'd like to see Associate Justice Richard F. Suhrheinrich before Jan. 20, 2009.

The key statement of the malaise affecting America. We have for the past 50 years been continually lowering the standard of what a "reasonable" person is: burn yourself with coffee at McDonald's? Not my fault! Eat till you get 500 lbs and in bad health? Not my fault! Can't speak English in an English-speaking society? Not my fault! Can't read a ballot in English or follow instructions? Etc., etc., etc. This tossing of responsibilty will destroy us if it is not reversed.

Perhaps so, but I think Janice Rogers Brown has a pretty good pulse on America too:
