UK to take up Russian Hindu cause

The campaign against the alleged harassment of Hindus in Russia by the Orthodox Church and the Mayor of Moscow is getting more intense in Britain.

Ashok Kumar, MP is launching the "Defend Russian Hindus Campaign" at the House of Commons in January.

There was umbrage here when it was learnt that Archbishop Nikon wrote a letter to the Mayor of Moscow urging him not to allow the construction of a Hindu temple in Moscow because according to him, Lord Krishna who is worshipped by the Hindu community was an "evil demon".

"Such untenable words in an age where interfaith harmony is the need of the day are nothing but an attempt to malign and persecute a faith community that teaches respect and freedom for every other faith community, " commented Ramesh Kallidai, Secretary General Hindu Forum of Britain, an umbrella organisation of most community groups in Britain.

The Defend Russian Hindus Campaign, launched by the Hindu Forum of Britain, Hindu Council UK, National Council of Hindu Temples UK, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Vishwa Hindu Parishad UK, Hindu Council of Australia, Hindu American Foundation and many other worldwide Hindu organisations, aims to build awareness about the alleged persecution and discrimination against Russian Hindus by a corpus of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Mayor of Moscow, despite support from the Central Government.

There are over 100,000 Hindus in Russia. In Moscow alone, there are 5,000 Hindus of Indian origin and over 10,000 Hindus of Russian origin.

Two years ago the Mayor of Russia asked Hindus to vacate their temple in exchange for a piece of land on which they could build a bigger temple. After land was allocated to the Hindu temple, the original temple was demolished. The Russian Orthodox Church orchestrated mass protests against the allocation of land and started a misinformation campaign against Hindus in the media.

On October 30, 2005, after bowing down to pressure from the Orthodox Church, the Mayor of Moscow cancelled the land order and took away the piece of land given for the construction of the Hindu temple. Now, the 15,000 Hindus in Moscow have no place to worship. The consecrated Deities of Radha and Krishna will have no home, say the Hindu leaders.

Kallidai said around the time of India Prime Minister's state visit to Moscow to meet Russian President Putin, Archbishop Nikon, a leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, called the Hindu God, Lord Krishna an "evil demon, the personified power of hell opposing God", and "a livid lascivious youth".

"So stop this stupid and childish infighting. And as for Christians, remember, while we consider Hindus pagans and not followers of the True Christ, insulting them will not bring anyone closer to Christ and will only drive ourselves further from his graces."

Spot on!

Yeah, for example USA, I’m curious what some of Russian Orthodox smartasses who post here would say then.

Nice to know that you're an EU stooge and have nothing to do with America. Go enjoy your future 300 page consitution that'll kick out Catholicism as well as Orthodoxy, since Christianity has no place in the EU...the devils org you sold your nations out to.

As a Christian I’m truly ashamed to read this kind of BS. About Russian Orthodox church behavior I’m not surprised, don’t expect much from former KGB agents. They use aggressive rhetoric towards Roman Catholic church as well.

Ahh the EU shill and instigator has arrived. Nothing like trying to seed havoc in those who will oppose your socialist, Godless state that Judases like you sold out Catholic Poland to. But why bring all that up, right?

No. I mean, rapists happen. What doesn't surprise me is that it was vigorously prosecuted in a relatively urban setting. And it's an extreme case anyway and beside the point.

The point is that crime statistics are meaningless across countries. For example, do you count accusations or convictions? In the American system, with relaxed civil court proceedings and the extreme difficulty of conviction, there is almost no disincentive to make a false accusation. Moreover, there are advantages in civil and divorce court to making an unprovable accusation of rape. To compare to, say Britain, with very relaxed notions of libel and slander, false accusations are discouraged, as well as genuine accusations if they're not easily provable.

"You support Turks and Saudis over Russians."

I don't support Saudis over Russians.

Do you support Turks? Was a Vienna battle in 1683 a mistake?

Seems evil, doen't he?

No. But my point is that polytheistic religions are inclusive. they worship the good and the bad, light and dark force. Pagans can honor gods of wisdom and of treachery, of love and death, of war and of arts. That is why cult of Kali CAN BE A PART of Hinduism.

Starting with Persian religion the good was separated from bad. and bad was proclaimed evil. In Jewish/Christian religion this direction became complete. The one principle took place of many, permanent casts became impossible while the danger of total oppression became more real (pluralism became harder to maintain).

Nietzsche considered Christian religion as a disease of mankind which turned the glory of pagan Mediterranean civilization into sickly, crippled caricature. But Christian leaders when they might see the paganism as playground of demons they are simply true to the Christian doctrine, although more subtle of them can see it as a mixture of good and bad/evil which is in error, but that parts of it can be redeemed..

BTW, the British who conquered India did not care to do missions because they have seen the religion as a mere tool of power. There were not very Christian.

Not true. Most of the Indian Christian institutes of learning and hospitals were built by the British in India.

Christianity has been in India longer than it has been in Europe. Some of the early converts(especially in Kerala and Goa) were the so-called "high caste" Hindus.

In North Western Europe. In Greece and Italy it was from the very beginning.

Please, understand me well. I have a great sympathy for Hindus and I see them as spiritual brethren of the ancient Greeks whom I admire. But polytheistic paganism is a forbidden fruit for those who have learned about One God.

"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God" (Ex:34:14)
