GARY, Ind. -- An auxiliary police officer accidentally shot her fiance in the leg while defending herself from a charging pit bull, authorities said.
The officer, Tracey Berry, will be required to be retrained on firearms, Deputy Chief Jeff Kumorek said Wednesday. Berry's police powers have been temporarily suspended in the meantime, he said.
"Witness accounts support her statement that the dog was attacking her," Kumorek said.
Berry was scheduled to work security for a basketball tournament Monday at Gary West High School and was walking toward the south entrance when a pit bull began running toward her, police said. The closest door was locked, keeping her from seeking shelter inside, and another auxiliary officer's effort to use his car to block the dog was unsuccessful.
At that point, Kumorek said Berry shot at the dog and hit her fiance, 40-year-old Andre Senter, who was nearby. Senter, who was hit in the leg, was treated at The Methodist Hospitals in Gary and released.
"Based on the investigation we believe it's an accidental shooting. But if there is a deficiency in her firearms training, then we need to address that," Kumorek said. "We want to retrain her with her weapon before we put her back on the street."
That's what I want to know. While her fiancee writhed in agony, the perp ran off.
ROFLOL.
Let's clear up one thing--the word "fiance" comes from French, and in French, nouns have gender (fiancé is masculine, fiancée is feminine).
This distinction has been retained in the English language, and Webster's gives the following definitions:
Fiance = a betrothed man
Fiancee = a betrothed woman
I won't comment on the outright stupidity of some of the replies other than to make three points:
1. It's far more difficult to shoot accurately under duress than a lot of people seem to think.
2. The article was woefully vague about exactly what happened.
3. There really is a difference between being funny and being stupid (misogynistic comments fall in the stupid category).
I'm absolutely NOT being ridiculous! And I definitely know that your are absolutely wrong in your assertion that "Nothing is as terrifying to all in the area as a woman with a gun.". That's the ridiculous statement. I've been to gun clubs all over the country and the facts counter your assertion.
Ninian, please stop howling. You've been caught in an unsupportable position. I hope you were trying to be funny, but you weren't.
"I was speaking in general. "
The trouble with speaking in general is that you are generally incorrect.
Notice they don't mention where the fiance was standing in relation to the attacking do. Was he wrestling with the dog, or ten feet away, or running like the wind? Had the two been arguing about the wedding plans earlier in the evening?
Firearms training? Maybe they need to reconsider who they allow to be an auxiliary officer.
So did she shoot her own fiance, or the pit bull's?
Thank you. My sister and I could always shoot rings around my brother who went on to get a "Sharpshooter" medal in the Marine Corps. I have always wondered how hard it could be.
Seeing that Gary Indiana is 12% white, 84% black and the rest a variety, it is still quite possible that they 'dumbed down' the tests if the police force did not 'reflect' the diversity of the city.
You know, typical liberal crap: Don't take the best qualified, take them according to population demographics.
Now thats a pinup girl.
Oh, I dunno. A man who doesn't know what he's doing can be pretty bad.
It is an Elvgren painting. He of course, was known for his pinups fromt he 30s into the 60s.
"Was he ever trained..."
'he' is a 'she' - you might want to read the whole story.
