MOSCOW – Call it PetroKremlin. A vast state-run energy conglomerate has been assembled over the past year, some experts say, to fuel Russia's bid to revive Soviet-style great power status.

To date, the Kremlin has effectively renationalized almost a third of the formerly private oil-and-gas sector. Other developments also point to growing state ambitions:

• A $15-billion Siberian pipeline, due to begin pumping in 2008, will shift Russian crude exports to Asia, particularly China, where Moscow is cultivating fresh strategic relationships.

We should drill in Russia and all over the globe until crude runs out - then open ANWR and sell crude for $300/barrel and make back all the money we paid to Arabs (with interest)

How's that for a plan?

Does not matter that much. There are maybe 30-40 years worth of resources there [The Saudis have about 100 yrs]. So as the depletion sets in, the volumes and prices will adjust accordingly - and now is a good time to look into the alternatives like coal to oil conversion. Such an approach is the absolute must for ex-soviet places, unless they want [which they do not - it is a nasty place to be] to fall back in that orbit.

If at first you don't succeed, try try again. With communism they will be trying for a VERY long time. And that which does work (capitalism) never gets tried this many times... odd.

Russia knows it can't influence and thug other nations with this military anymore, so its going to try to do it with oil and natural gas.

Example:

Putin just annouced they are going to quadruple natural gas prices to the Ukraine begining next month, while Belarus will be charged next to nothing.
