Pasadena's Top Ten Urban Myths

John Stossel has a column on the Top Ten List of Foolish Media Myths (excerpted below). What would the list look like if applied to the City of Pasadena?

No. 10: Pasadenans have less free time due to traffic congestion and the light rail is the best solution. No. 9. Closing four schools and sharing services with the City will solve Pasadena Unified School District's financial crisis. No. 8: Democrats make for good government. No. 7: Pasadena is getting too crowded. No. 6. Chemicals like perchlorate in drinking water are leading to learning deficits in our young children. No. 5: Smoking in public parks and public establishments is bad and is banned. No. 4: Housing in Pasadena is unaffordable requiring an inclusionary (luxury) housing program. No. 3: We're destroying our open space by allowing development in "rural" Annandale Estates. No. 2: Spending $50 million extra to preserve the City Hall was better than building a new modern building. No. 1: Pasadena needs to stop the Raymond Theater from conversion into apartments.

John Stossel's original Top Ten Foolish Myths:

No. 10: Americans have less free time than we used to. No. 9. Money buys happiness. No. 8: Republicans shrink government. No. 7: The world is getting too crowded. No. 6. Chemicals are killing us. No. 5: Guns are bad. No. 4: We're drowning in garbage. No. 3: We're destroying our forests. No. 2: Getting cold will give you a cold. No. 1: Life is getting worse.

No. 10: Pasadenans have less free time due to traffic congestion

I thought the only time Pasadenans drove was to church on Sunday. At least that's what the guy who sold me this car told me.

Pasadena

Oh, you railway station, oh you Pullman train.
Here’s my reservation for my destination,
Far beyond the western plains,
To see my…

Home in Pasadena, home where grass is greener,
Where honeybees hum melodies, and orange trees scent the breeze,
I want to be a home sweet homer, there I’ll settle down
Beneath the palms in someone’s arms,
In Pasadena town.

Lyrics: Grant Clarke and Edgar Leslie copyright 1923
Music: Harry Warren
Recorded by Vernon Dalhart, Al Jolson, Paul Whitemen, and others, 1924
