Cornyn Speaks On Immigration (opposes a fence)
The Monitor ^ | December 28,2005 | Victoria Hirschberg

Posted on 12/28/2005 5:36:33 AM PST by Reaganwuzthebest

MISSION — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.

Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence — which could start in California and end in Brownsville — although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.

He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.

"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.

Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.

"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isn’t going to solve anything."

Well, since he is a Republican, I'm just gonna trust him.

/Gagging sarcasm.

If he removes all doors and locks from his house; if he doesn't call 911 or try to eject any uninvited people that have entered his home, I might be more inclined to believe him to be sincere. Extremely stupid and naive, but sincere.

[No fence and then let all the 'workers' in and expect them to go home on their own! Why do we have idiots for politicians?]

Because even idiots need high paying jobs? Just a guess.

"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem,"

Actually, it is at least a 7th millenia BC invention as seen at the ancient walls of Jericho. Seems to me they work pretty well. I wonder if Cornyn plans to take down is garden wall so his neighbor has better access to his property?

I would simply note that if opponents of a fence didn't believe it would be effective, they wouldn't bother opposing it.

That is an astounding statement. I suppose everything you oppose is effective.

I haven't read far enough to see if you two have started talking to each other or are still talking past each other.

Here it is:

You both like the House bill.

meema's comment was not that what the WH or Senate wanted WAS better, only that what they wanted would be the best that we could expect because they will water down the better bill from the House.

Clear? Okay, kiss and make up. ;-)

Cornyn, like most of the cowards in Washington, thinks that America just needs to shut up and accept this invasion. Not one of them ever mentions the fact that American taxpayers are forced to pay billions every year to support these invaders.

The congressional elections next year will tell the story of whether or not Americans are ready to roll over and play dead. The open borders bunch in Washington have a big surprise coming.

That's the way it looks to me too. The same ones like Flake, Kolbe and Cornyn who oppose a fence back a massive guest worker program precisely because they do know it'll work. My hunch is Cornyn will ultimately support the fence but ONLY if the House goes along with his cheap labor importation plan. Hopefully they ignore his extortionist tactics.

I think the people who believe a fence will end illegal immigration haven't really thought this through.

Very few people that I know of have actually said a fence will end the problem The goal is to slow it down and make it more manageable.

I can assues you that a good border fence project will make the control MUCH easer. I can speak from direct experence that in many areas not only is there no fence or barrier of any kind, there a footbridges that cross the river so the illegals don't even get their feet wet. Additionally, there are such footbridges located within 400 yards of a major Texas Highway (speed limit 65!) with unblocked all weather roads connecting directly to it.

The time is way overdue to put full control on the border. What we don't need is a bunch of waffeling about tunnels and ladders and how it is impossable to control it. It is VERY possable and needs to be done N-O-W.

Another one of the "won't work - can't be done - costs too much" defeatists who continue to show up on our immigration threads. Scratch 'em deep enough, and we too often find a pro-illegal alien enabler, apologist or supporter. No proposed fix is good enough and all are doomed to failure. There isn't a loyal American conservative in the group. Their slogan is "Lets do nothing some more".

Senate Cornyn is NOT A RINO. He's very conservative. Just 'cause his views are different than yours doesn't make him a RINO.

"If you ask for donations to build the fence, you would receive Billions -- far more than enough to build the fence. I will be the first in line with my checkbook."

Perhaps..but do you think states without a border with Mexico will pony up? Do you think Senator Clinton from NY will allow 'her' state to use State Funds to help pay for the fence? You better believe she will not. I don't think Texas should get stuck with the bill or any other border state. Every State should be required to help pay from State funds.

"A fence, unless electrified, will not deter the coyotes bringing illegals in. "

Nonsense. Why do you think they go AROUND what little fence there is?

If we don't do something serious about stopping illegal immigration Senator Clinton is going to turn into President Clinton and democrats will be running Congress again for the next half century. Look at California's politics to see what the future of the whole country is going to be like.

MEXIFORNIA. Coming to all other states whether we like it or not.

The morons in Washington who have allowed this mess need to be booted out of their cushy jobs. They are not representing America anymore.

"Senate Cornyn is NOT A RINO. He's very conservative."

If he's so conservative, why does he have an immigration voting record that is about one click away from being totally in the crapper? He has an ABI Report Card rating of C- for both Career and Recent grading areas. That he recognizes his lousy record is clear from his having managed to get his name attached to one of the proposed "Reform" bills.

The more that come in the more both parties pander to them. I can't imagine what it's going to be like 20 years from now if the invasion isn't stopped, it'll be like we don't even exist anymore. They're barely listening to us now.

Okay, your comment makes sense if we have locked all the other borders and the border with Mexico is the last unlocked one.

So, you foresee millions of would-be illegal aliens teleporting themselves to Canada before sneaking over that border, or do you foresee them in vast armadas of invisible ships?

Get real.

""That appears to be the last thing on their minds...""

Apparently not, as the Kyl/Cornyn bill requires Mexico to foot their medical bills while here in the US.

Just curious...Do you think the federal government should foot the entire bill for the fence and tougher immigration or should the states help foot the bill?

Let's see, it's right in this forgotten dusty document:

U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 4:

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,

and shall protect each of them against Invasion;"

Invasion: \In*va"sion\, n. [L. invasio: cf. F. invasion. See Invade.] [1913 Webster]

1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
