SEATTLE, Dec. 26 - Among the depleted ranks of police departments throughout the country, it has come to this: desperate want ads offering signing bonuses to new recruits, and cops paying other cops to find new cops.
It seems nobody wants to be a police officer anymore, officials say. As a result, departments are taking a page from recruiters in sports and the corporate world. Here in King County, the most populous in the Pacific Northwest, the Sheriff's Office is trying a kind of bounty hunting: any deputy who can bring in someone who eventually becomes an officer will get a bonus of 40 hours of extra vacation time, worth up to $1,300.

I don't know too many cities who aren't having problems recruiting.
San Diego and Lexington, Kentucky are liberal cities?
They laid of about 20 cops here in Spokane. Jeeeez, go figure....
Who would want to serve in a community where the criminals have more rights than the police or the average citizen? (Austin TX.)
In the old days, Peace Officers would arrest, track down criminals. Now they are social engineering enforcers.
The police should be about public order.
Catching criminals should be put out to bounty.
Better service all round and more enthusiasm.
Why? Because the degenerate fantasies of liberals always end in blood and crime. Their idea of the social order is a hedonistic idiocy.
The local cities here, Kansas City, Ks. and KCMO, are both short handed, I think, but not critically so. I imagine that the problems in San Diego and LA and Seattle are caused by the same issue we have here. Suburbs are also expanding their police forces, they pay as well or better than the major cities, and the chances of getting shot are slimmer. It's not a question of few people wanting to be police officers but greater demand for those that do.
Why would anyone want to be a cop in a place run by a left-wing government, other than the opportunities for self-enrichment through corruption?
God bless him. Let's pray that the politicians in that state give him the chance to do so, rather than giving him a role as a nanny-state enforcer.
I want to see how he responds to that part of the job since his conservatism makes most FReepers look like liberals.
Well put. It is amazing that so many, even on FR still don't get this basic truth.
An agressive rollback of all big government social engineering for the last fifty years is crucial.
Who wouldn't want to choose a career that entails serving an uninformed and abusive public, a corrupt political machine, wearing a bullet proof vest while directing traffic, and personally having to bear all the slings and arrows because of 5 - 10 % of your fellows?
Of course the liberal trash will probably push to hire illegal immigrants to do these jobs that "Americans don't want to do."
Don't you just love these liberals?
1) They disembowel the police department
2) They defend the worst criminals
3) And then they are the first to cry "help" when crime rates skyrocket.
Of course they cry for help. It is their constitutional right to have everything done for them while they march in protest because it wasn't done to their satisfaction.
Many communities have gone from peace officers who ensure the ability of citizens to peacably go about their lawful business to law enforcement which now harasses the citizens for petty violations of bureaucratic decrees and protects power hungry politicians.
