Former House Majority Leader Trent Lott is mulling over two widely divergent options: Retiring from Congress or running again in 2006 and trying to regain a top GOP leadership post.
His decision could determine whether Republicans retain control of the Senate next year, according to nationally syndicated columnist Robert Novak.
GOP officials in Mississippi believe Lott will probably retire, and they fear that would leave the door open for former State Attorney General Mike Moore, a Democrat, to win his Senate seat, Novak reports.
But Lott has dropped hints that he might not only seek a fourth term, but a Senate leadership post as well.
Lott was forced to resign his position as majority leader after the 2002 elections due to comments he made in praise of one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, which made Lott appear nostalgic for the days of segregation.
But he recently told the Sun Herald in Mississippi that if re-elected he might run for a Senate leadership post "just to make everybody nervous.
Back in July, NewsMax reported that Lott had set his sights on the job of party whip, the No. 2 GOP post.
That was before Hurricane Katrina ravaged parts of Mississippi, sweeping away Lotts home in Pascagoula and costing him half of his net worth, according to Novak. And his financial condition could heavily influence his decision on whether to run.
But the National Journal recently stated that "the most likely results of the Senate midterm elections would include Lott stepping into the role of GOP whip.
Lott told the Sun Herald hell make his decision before the end of the year.
Said Mississippi GOP chairman Jim Herring: "Hopefully Sen. Lott will ... adopt as his New Years resolution that he will run again for six more years.
Does Lott run this story up the flagpole once a week just to see if he's gotten any more interest than he had the week before?
Lott's leadership was weak at best, why would anyone think he'd do better a second time around?
We don't want to know how you found that, bud...
If'n he retires maybe he can spend more time working on his flood insurance law suit....
Lott made Dole look like a decisive partisan leader...and that's not saying much. GOP Senate has a history of selecting idiots as Majority Leader.
Senator Lott is delusional. (Unless the whole thing's made up, of course.)
How about someone BESIDES Lott or Frist. Both have proven to be wimps. Even McCain would be better because at least he wouldn't let the Dems make him look like a fool.
I wish we could find someone who knows how to play nasty partisan politics like the 'Rats do.
No he does it to drum up the dollars.
Dream on. Screw up once and it's your fault. Secrew up twice, and it's ours. It's still your fault, Trent.
Frankly, it looks like Whorelan Sphincter and Mcstain run the Senate. Won't matter who has the title.
That's what I'd like to know. He was majority leader. He screwed up BADLY
He and Spectre can go somewhere anywhere together
I doubt that Trent has even the slightest clue that making his apologies to the 'rats was his downfall....not a clue.
No no no --- he is too wimpy
His downfall was letting the GOP get to the point where a moron like Jumpin' Jim Jeffords was a factor.
