'Sausage King' is found dead in his prison cell

(12-27) 09:39 PST SAN QUENTIN -- The self-proclaimed "Sausage King" sentenced to death in February for murdering three meat inspectors during a 2000 rampage was found dead in his prison cell this morning.

Prison spokesman Sgt. Eric Messick said a correctional officer conducting routine rounds at 4:30 a.m. noticed that Stuart Alexander, 44, did not appear to be breathing.

"He was quickly removed from his cell," Messick said. "All attempts to revive him failed."

The prison physician pronounced Alexander dead at 5:15 a.m. The Marin County Coroner is scheduled to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

"There is nothing to suggest any foul play," Messick said, adding that it did not appear that Alexander killed himself.

Alexander was housed in a cell by himself in the infirmary, where he was being evaluated for health issues, Messick said.

Messick said that Alexander had spent time in the infirmary off and on since June, but he would not reveal the nature of Alexander's health problems.

On Oct. 19, 2004, a jury convicted Alexander of three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and four special-circumstances murder clauses for killing three inspectors on June 21, 2000.

In February, an Alameda County superior court Judge Vernon Nakahara sentenced Alexander to death.

A security camera at Alexander's Santos Linguisa Factory in San Leandro captured the shooting deaths of U.S. Department of Agriculture Inspectors Jean Hillery, 56, and Tom Quadros, 52, and state Inspector Bill Shaline, 57.

Alexander -- once a San Leandro mayoral candidate -- also was convicted of attempted murder for chasing state Inspector Earl Willis and firing five shots at him. Willis was not injured.

Judging from the photo, I'd say too much sausage in his diet, resulting in obesity and, probably, clogged arteries. Just a hunch.
