ROME - Character actor Vincent Schiavelli, who appeared in scores of movies, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Ghost," died Monday at his home in Sicily. He was 57.

He died of lung cancer, said Salvatore Glorioso, mayor of Polizzi Generosa, the Sicilian village where Schiavelli resided.

Schiavelli, whose gloomy, droopy-eyed look made him perfect to play creepy or eccentric characters, made appearances in some 150 film and television productions, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Among the movies: "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Amadeus," "Batman Returns," and "The People vs. Larry Flint." He was selected in 1997 by Vanity Fair as one of America's best character actors.

Schiavelli, who was born and raised in New York, studied acting at New York University's School of the Arts. He also wrote three cookbooks and many food articles for magazines and newspapers, possibly inheriting his love for cooking from his grandfather, who had been a cook for an Italian baron before moving to the United States, according to IMDB.

"He was a great friend, a great chef and a great talker," Glorioso, who has known Schiavelli for almost four years, said in a telephone interview. "With a smooth, witty conversation, he would make everything look more colorful. I've lost a brother," he said. Schiavelli also had worked in Italy, including in 2001 when he directed a theater piece in Sicily based on nine fables. A funeral service will be held Tuesday

Wow, so young. I made the name-face connection immediately; very distinctive character actor. Movies like Ghost, TV like Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- sort of like Anthony Quinn in being your one-actor-fits-all European type, whether Italian or Greek or Romanian, or just scary-guy.

Oh my gosh! I was just rewatching the first two seasons of Moonlighting, and he was prominently featured in one of the episodes. Eternal rest.

Loved him in "Better off Dead".

Hilarious movie. He played the math teacher who ends up dating Lane's girlfriend.

Funny guy - he will be missed.

He had a small role in the opening scene of ''Amadeus.'' Rest in peace, Vincent.

RIP. Was good in almost every role I saw him do. No idea why his role in "Ghost" didn't propel him to bigger things.
Here's his acting credits

He was--

--the Subway Ghost in "Ghost"
--the cheezy servant in the opening scene of "Amadeus"
--a wonderfully slimy arms dealer in a Star Trek Next Generation episode I can't remember the title of
--in "Moonlighting" (can't remember episodes; it's been 20 years)

...and I always will remember him as one of those great character actors whose name you forget but face you immediately recognize.

God rest him. He was a great entertainer.

Buckaroo Bonzai's most interesting character.........

I was going to say that!

Whenever I see a picture of him, the one line that goes through my head is John O'Connor's line from "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension".

"Nice night, huh?"
