N.J. Rejects Joke Slogans
The Washington Times ^ | 26 December 2005 | Reuters

New Jersey, trying to overcome its reputation for corruption, traffic and toxic waste dumps, has rejected dozens of sardonic and sarcastic entries in a contest for a new tourist slogan.

A list of five possible slogans released last week leaves out "New Jersey: We can always use another relative on the payroll," and "Come to New Jersey: It's not as bad as it smells."

Voters get to pick the winner in the competition launched after acting Gov. Richard J. Codey threw out "New Jersey: We'll Win You Over."

"It makes me think of when I was young and single and asked a girl out," Mr. Codey said of that slogan, created by a consultant who was paid $260,000. "She turned me down. I said "Give me a chance, I'll win you over."

Nearly 7,800 entries were submitted to promote a state not widely known for its pristine countryside and sun-soaked beaches.

I sent the suggestion "New Jersey- It's so damn expensive to live here, so you might as well just visit" , but they didn't like it.

New Jersey: Who Farted?

New Jersey: Kiss her where it stinks!

New Jersey: Those aren't projects, those are the ancient ruins of Newark!

New Jersey: What's my cut for this slogan?

I hunted St. Paul's Abbey property for over 18 years, back in the '60's. I had a friend, who's brother was a priest there, and had written permission. Nice little bass pond there too. ;)

Ahhh ... the good old days!

Merry Christmas!

Because the southern portion of the state once produced a large share of the tomatoes, eggplants and green vegetables for the major cities on the east coast.

My aunt and uncle lived in Neptune City when I was little. In order to visit them, my dad had to drive through Elizabeth (the armpit of the nation) and it's pork rendering plants. I can remember holding my nose for that part of the trip and joking about "The Garden State"...

Why do they call New Jersey the Garden State?

Because farming was and still is a major industry. During Colonial times, New Jersey was described as having the finest farmland of any of the 13 colonies.

Don't believe everything you hear about NJ. It has its problems like every place else but most of the state is rural and very beautiful.
